The Ratification of the Constitution & the New U.S. Gov’t
Lesson Outline
On September 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention submitted its proposal for a new constitution to Congress. While the delegates intended to revise the Articles, they wrote a new Constitution. Federalists and Anti-federalists in the various states debated the merits of the new Constitution. In New York, the Federalists Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay wrote a series of essays supporting the Constitution, later published as the Federalist Papers. One of the major concerns of the Anti-federalists was the absence of a ''bill of rights'' which would guarantee certain human rights. The Federalists argued that such a bill of rights could be added later. The new Constitution was ratified when New Hampshire became the ninth state to do so in June 1788. In May 1790, Rhode Island was the last state to ratify the Constitution.

We studied the function and impact of the first person narrative by discussing how the diary form of narrative gives the reader insight into the most personal thoughts and feelings of the narrator and creates empathy . We then examined the first pages and noted the introduction of certain themes such as the relationship between happiness and conformity and the ethics of scientific /medical procedures that suggest happiness can be scientifically achieved . In this regard, we discussed whether intelligence is a critical element of happiness and why people have plastic surgery notwithstanding the risks of poor outcomes.

The Articles of Confederation & Northwest Ordinance
Lesson Outline
The Articles of Confederation were the first official government of the United States. It created a united group of state governments held together by a loose and weak federal government. In theory, the federal government retained the power to declare war, borrow money, and communicate with Native American people. It was the government's responsibility to settle state disputes and make treaties, but it lacked the means to enforce these rules, which led to competition and discontent among the states. The primary power of lawmaking was left to the states. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 dealt with the creation of new states within the Northwest Territory, but the Ordinance's order to protect Native American lands and rights was wholly ignored by federal and state governments. It declared the abolition of slavery in the Northwest Territory and any states to come, the freedom of religion, and a right to a trial by jury. It also specifically laid out the legal path to statehood.
