As Joshua wlll benefit from additional practice drawing inferences about character from textual details , today's lesson addressed that skill. Online we studied two AP passages. In the first passage, I assisted Joshua in first identifying details about the character and from there inferring some trait or past history about that character. I explained the inference process as we discussed the passage. Joshua then looked at the second passage. Once I focused him on certain textual details he did well in recognizing the "complex" relationship between the characters representing a tension between old/ traditional and new/ modern,

Today I provided instruction on symbolic settings, and how contrasting settings can represent cultural or value conflicts. Joshua did very well in class discussing how the conflicting settings in "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan and in"The Great Gatsby" reflect conflicting cultural values . I next provided instruciton on how narrative pacing can create meaning or suspense. We discussed how Faulkner's lack of a chronological narrative conveys theme in "A Rose for Emily." Last, we examined Joshua's rewrite of his character essay on "The Open Boat" and worked on the role of commentary in an analytical essay. I provided examples of where and how to add commentary.
Discuss how heat of fusion and heat of vaporization are used to calculate heat transferred during a change of state. These involve solid to liquid and liquid to vapors ( and vice versa). indicate how energy is required to overcome attractive forces. Define heat of fusion and heat of vaporization and note that the temperature is constant throughout the change. Given the heat of fusion for solid water and the heat of vaporization for liquid water, show by example how to determine the heat relied on for a given amount of ice or liquid water.

We worked on editing and rewriting Joshua's two essays on Cranes'"The Open Boat." First, we addressed the introduction to the essay on the sea as a character in the story whose function conveys theme. I demonstrated how to reorder the opening paragraph and where to add a critical plot event in order to highlight the story's theme of Nature's indifference to Mankind's misfortunes. We further discussed the due AP classroom work which provides the opportunity to practice AP MCQ's on the topics we are studying. Joshua spent the last minutes of class rewriting his essay.
Outline how heat energy is transferred within a system from a solid object to water. Present a problem which includes the the specific heat, mass, and temperature change for two items in contact with each other. Calculate the specific heat of the metal given 5 of the six variables.
Lab to determine speed and acceleration due to an object rolling along an inclined plane. By adjusting the height and taking time measurements, the average speed is determined and the acceleration calculated. The acceleration due to gravity in free fall is determined.
