Noelle and I spent our time on multiplication and division. We began with multi-digit multiplication with regrouping, working our way from 2-factor to 4-factor problems. Then, Noelle was shown the standard long division algorithm as well as the box method. After Noelle used each method to solve a problem, she choose to focus on using the box method. She solved numerous problems and was shown how to use multiplication to check her work. Today, we focused on problems with 1-digit divisors and will expand to 2-digit divisors on Thursday.

For today's lesson, Noelle and I looked over the mental minute that she took home for homework. This guided us to focus on fractions and division. We began with a quick refresher on basic fractions before expanding to improper fractions and mixed numbers which were explained with visual models. We also discussed how to change an improper fraction to a mixed number which was the original question from the mental minute. Then, both the standard long division and division using the box method were shown to Noelle as different strategies to solve division problems. Finally, we worked in her workbook on finding factors, greatest common factors, and multiples.

Noelle and I continued to work on rounding to estimate the values of equations with all operations. She struggled with the division problems which steered us to a refresher on long division. We reviewed the parts of a division problem and the step-by-step process of solving long division. Then, we discussed the parts of multiplication equations and how to find the factors of numbers. Noelle wrote all of the factor pairs of given numbers as multiplication equations and wrote the factors in order from smallest to largest.

Today, Noelle worked on rounding to estimate. We began with rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand, looking to the neighbor number to determine if the rounding digit stayed the same or increased by 1. Once Noelle was confident with these, we practiced rounding each place with numbers to the millions. Then, Noelle used rounding to estimate the values of addition and subtraction equations. Finally, we discussed how to multiply by multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 using basic facts. Noelle rounded the factors, crossed out zeros, solved the basic multiplication fact, and added the crossed-out zeros to find the estimated product.

Today, Noelle and I continued to work on fundamental numerical skills. She began by arranging numbers in ascending and descending order. Then, she worked with number patterns by recognizing if the numbers increased or decreased and the place value where the change occurred, completing the patterns after determining the change rule. Finally, Noelle used mental math to add and subtract multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 up to 10,000 as well as how to use this same skill for the numbers 9, 99, and 999.

Noelle wrote the correct digits of numbers given in word form, identified the value of each digit, and verbally spoke the number, focusing on saying each group of 3-digits together. Then, Noelle easily and quickly compared larger numbers before working on this week's 3s facts.
