Today, Atticus completed the second half of the lab from yesterday. He explored how mass affects total thermal energy. He answered the follow-up questions.
Today, we started a new lesson. We will be recreating master painters works of art. Atticus chose to study Vincent Van Gogh. He started by choosing an artwork that he wanted to recreate and prepped his canvas.
Atticus and I worked together to transfer a Naruto character onto a canvas. Atticus used the remaining part of class to paint the skin of his character.
Atticus completed a reading comprehension activity pertaining to the story of David and Goliath. He demonstrated his knowledge of the story by taking notes of important facts about David’s life. He then drew a portrait of David.
Today's session focused on reading comprehension of the novel and the use of similes. Using the study guide homework as a foundation, we addressed Atticus' questions about events in the novel by examining the text along with study guide in order to formulate written responses that were less general and more text specific. After examining the author's use of simile , Atticus revised his study guide response by astutely recognizing that the function of the simile was to portray the Nazi soldiers as unfeeling and emotionless. Atticus is very interested in increasing and applying his already vast vocabulary and as such we incorporated words such as "ergo" and" rationalization" into his work.
Atticus previewed and read pages 3-22 of ‘The Book Thief.’ During reading, we stopped to define unknown vocabulary and question the narrator’s description of himself. Atticus identified the narrator on the second page, rather remarkable for a first read. Our comprehension conversation was led by his questions about the narrator’s point of view.
Today, Atticus completed half of the "In Hot Water" lab. We performed an experiment where we test the effect of two different masses of the same temperature warm water on two beakers of the same mass of room temperature water. We measured the temperature changes and will compare them tomorrow. We will complete the lab tomorrow.
Today's lesson focused on reviewing the mid-topic checkpoint and the recent ratio lessons. Writing ratios in different ways, using a ratio table to interpret ratios, comparing ratios, and graphing values on a coordinate plane from a ratio table were all reviewed. Then, Atticus worked on cumulative review questions on writing, graphing, and solving equations, graphing rational numbers on a number line, evaluating expressions, and graphing values on a coordinate plane.
