Today, Atticus and I read a passage about bone marrow transplants. Bone marrow contains stem cells, which perform cell differentiation. We learned that bone marrow transplants occur to help people with blood diseases so that the stem cells can differentiate into healthy, specialized cells, replacing the cancerous ones.
We explored the relationship between money and happiness in connection with the scenes the ghost of Christmas Present shares with Scrooge. Atticus did well noting how Dickens' descriptions of the poor in society portray the poor as financially poor but spiritually rich. We contrasted Scrooge's unhappy lonely life with the rich family life of the Cratchit family. Atticus enjoyed the descriptions of the Cratchit's Victorian Christmas meal. After reviewing and correcting Atticus' vocabulary homework, Atticus prepared another journal entry discussing Bob Cratchit's generosity of spirit toward his harsh employer,Scrooge.
This morning, we reviewed the quiz that Atticus took home for last night's homework on evaluating numerical expressions. He skipped 2 questions and struggled with the ones completed which he corrected during class. He only scored a 60% but will be given extra credit for homework tonight. Then, we began the next unit on generating equivalent expressions using the commutative, associative, or distributive property of operations. For homework, Atticus was assigned 6 questions on evaluating numerical expressions worth 20 points towards his quiz if all of his work is shown and correctly answered.
This morning, we were unable to review last night's extra credit homework because it was left at home. We discussed the importance of being responsible and organized. Atticus began the unit review and answered questions on writing expressions using exponents, evaluating exponents, finding the GCF for number pairs using prime factorization, and finding the LCM for number pairs. Then, we discussed the properties of operations and how they can be used to write and identify equivalent expressions. Atticus was assigned the section on evaluating numerical expressions from the unit review.
Atticus worked on practicing on the pottery wheel. He worked on coming and flattening. We worked on allowing the wheel to spin at full speed in order to get the coming step down correctly.
