Atticus took a test on the first 3 chapters of "A Christmas Carol" during today's session. After he completed the test, we reviewed his journal entries from last night's reading and discussed ways to modify and supplement his entries.
Today, Atticus and I finished his levels of organization modeling activity. He modeled the following levels of organization using paper shapes and differently colored and shaped objects: cells, tissues, organs, organ systems and organism. He wrote responses to the follow-up questions in his workbook.
Atticus reviewed his vocabulary words for this unit on Mesopotamia. He completed a map skills lesson demonstrating his knowledge and understanding of the compass rose, and how it relates to a map of the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
Atticus and I looked over this weekend's homework on writing and evaluating both numerical and algebraic expressions. He is still making careless mistakes but continues to develop his skills in using the order of operations. Then, our lesson focused on simplifying algebraic expressions by combining like terms. Finally, we identified equivalent expressions using the properties of operations and substitution and Atticus was assigned the remainder of the problems for homework.
In preparation for upcoming tests, we today reviewed chapters 1-3 and took notes on an essay topic: "A Christmas Carol" - societal and individual redemption. " Atticus did very well in class discussion first identifying examples of the story's depiction of the need for society to reform the Poor Laws and the Debtor's Prison laws as a means of societal
redemption. Focusing on individual redemption, we next discussed how the three spirits bring about Scrooge's redemption. We located specific examples of Scrooge's comments that demonstrated his changing values as the story evolves. Last, we reviewed the symbols and plot line of the first 3 chapters in preparation for tomorrow's test. HW-STUDY for test/revise journal entries for pages 41-45.
Today, Atticus and I investigate how tissues are organized in the body. We discussed how cells of the same type group together to make a specific type of tissue, such as muscle tissue, fat tissue, nervous tissue, bone tissue, etc. He wrote down an explanation as to how different cell types group together to make tissues. We then read a passage about organs. We underlined the definition of organs, wrote it in our science notebook with the definition, and drew a picture of an organ.
Atticus and I reviewed Wednesday night's homework on evaluating numerical expressions. He has been doing well with these in class but missed each problem on his homework from careless arithmetic errors. He redid the problems correctly, explaining where and why the mistakes were made while he worked. Then, we continued with identifying and writing equivalent expressions using the properties of operations. For homework, Atticus was assigned the lesson review questions on writing and evaluating numerical and algebraic expressions.

Lesson Comments
Atticus never turned in his homework on time this week. One night's homework was extra credit to increase his 60% quiz score. As it was late, I did not accept it but he didn't seem to care.
We noted the thematic significance of all of the scenes the Ghost of Christmas Present shares with Scrooge. Atticus discussed how these scenes of the impoverished during Christmas affect Scrooge and perhaps hasten his redemption. Continuing our discussion of character, we then examined Fred's charitable opinion of Scrooge notwithstanding Scrooge's rejection of Fred's Christmas invitation and wishes. Since Atticus did not complete his assigned journal entries last night, we then reviewed the text to locate significant passages that Atticus could analyze. We discussed Atticus' journal entries for the remainder of the session. I further advised Atticus that there will be test on Chapters 1-3 next Tuesday.
