Today, we reviewed why a large surface area to volume ratio is critical for a cell's ability to absorb and transport enough nutrients into its interior. We read about the two energy-related organelles: chloroplasts and mitochondria. Atticus observed an illustration of a mitochondria and chloroplast, and he wrote a response in the workbook to the following questions: What do you notice about the two organelles to the left? What are their differences, and what are their similarities? Can you infer what their functions are? We then discussed and read about the nucleus. Atticus answered the following question in his workbook: Can you think of some analogies for the nucleus? Use the space below to make a drawing, diagram, or other illustration to help you understand the structure and function of the nucleus.
This morning, Atticus completed the lesson's quick check quiz which was last night's incomplete homework. We reviewed the order of operations again before Atticus evaluated numerical expressions, chose the expression with the given value, and wrote an expression to model a word story. He was unable to complete these independently and needed reminders to show all of his work and not jump ahead. By the end of our lesson, Atticus said he understood and wanted to take home the 8-question mid-chapter check to complete for homework.
Atticus and I set up the pottery wheel. We went over what each part on the wheel does and we went over the safety handout. We did a quick demo and practice on how to turn the wheel on, how to adjust the speed manually and with the pedal, and how to attach and detach the water basins to the machine. Afterwards, he finished his interior spaces drawing.
As we are having a chapter test on Monday, during our first segment we reviewed the plot of chapters 18-20. We then discussed the term "dystopian protagonist " and the characteristics of the dystopian protagonist as this topic will be the subject of Monday's composition writing. Atticus offered an interesting metaphorical analysis of the dystopian protagonist comparing the protagonist to someone escaping from a box. Further, we discussed the events of chapter 21 describing Jonas' escape from the community .During our second session , I noted that the author has by chapter 22 conveyed her thesis and uses the rest of the novel to portray Jonas' escape from the community. In order to help summarize some of the events and thematic elements, I projected an exercise that required Atticus to in his notebook describe what Jonas has learned about the following : hunger, war, family, pain, and grief. We discussed the specific memories that the Giver imparted to Jonas that provided the basis for his knowledge and how this knowledge set Jonas apart from the other members of the community.

Atticus is having difficulty concentrating while he reads his assigned homework . He often has no recollection of basic plot events . We will work on his keeping a journal and/or annotating to address this situation.
Today, Atticus and I completed the second half of our cell membrane/ surface area to volume ratio lab activity. We observed that our cubed egg whites absorbed blue dye from the water. We cut them open to observe how far the dye penetrated to the interior of the small versus large cubes. He drew models of the lab in his workbook. He recorded his observations and inferences. I then reviewed how to calculate surface area and volume of a cube. We used this information to calculate the surface area to volume ratio of a small and large cube. We compared the ratios, and observed that the larger the ratio, the more successfully a cell/cube of egg white will be able to transport nutrients from its cell membrane into the interior organelles of the cell.
This morning, we began with a review of the order of operations and the problems that Atticus struggled with on his homework. After our review, he felt more confident with his abilities and quickly completed the missed questions. Then, Atticus completed an exponent review, writing them in expanded form and evaluating them. Finally, Atticus began the lesson's quick quiz and was assigned the remainder of the questions for homework with all work needing to be shown.
