Life Science - 6 Characteristics of Living Things Project
Lesson Outline
Today, Atticus completed his daily mental warm-up exercises. He then completed his 6 Characteristics of Living Things Project. He read a passage in his workbook about prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and organelles. He completed a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. He read about the 3 domains of life: bacteria, archaea and eukarya. He read about the kingdoms of each domain, then read a passage discussing if viruses are living or nonliving. He researched further questions he has about viruses, preparing to write a paragraph about his findings.
We reviewed ancient historic times week 4 in Social Studies Weekly, articles 4, 5 & 6. Atticus then worked on completing a blank map I gave him of the US. He seems very enthusiastic about geography.
This morning, Atticus and I began with a review on multiplying decimals by powers of 10 and exponents of decimals as well as exponents of zero and one. Then, we reviewed last night's homework on understanding powers, writing powers, and evaluating powers and expressions. Atticus was a little overwhelmed and struggled with the concept of repeated multiplication instead of multiplying the base by the exponent. We will continue with this lesson tomorrow and review tonight's correlating problem-solving homework.
Atticus read chapter 11 and part of chapter 12 of ‘Out of My Mind.’ While reading, he noted how some familiar vocabulary words were used in unfamiliar ways. After reading, we discussed the students' reactions to the inclusion process.
Atticus read chapter 17 in 'The Giver,' a novel by Lois Lowry. He then answered three open-ended questions, one of which was a 2-part question that pertained to the content of the novel in his notebook. Atticus's answers reflected a good ability to analyze, interpret, integrate, and synthesize information. As he worked, Atticus played calming nature music in the background - but only after requesting permission to do so. He is an extremely diligent, conscientious, respectful, and deferential student.
