10-1 The Square Root Function – We discovered that the square root function contains a square root symbol with the independent variable in the radicand. Then we practiced determining the horizontal and/or vertical shift of the square root function based on the numbers added or subtracted from the radical.

Malcolm Mitchell NFL Star Who Values Reading over Sport
Lesson Outline
Malcolm Jarod Mitchell is an author, poet, and a former American football wide receiver. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2016. He played college football at the University of Georgia for the GA Bulldogs and he was known as "football royalty" in GA. One day, he was in a local Athens, GA Barnes & Noble and he began to chat with a woman (who had no idea who he was) about her book club. Malcolm asked if he could could join and she said, "honey, I don't think you want to be in a club with middle aged women." Malcolm insisted he did and he became an active member. What Malcolm later revealed to CBS News is that he was more proud of reading and discussing these books than he was of his legendary moves on the football field. He confided he started college with a middle school reading level and strengthening his reading and writing skills was important for him. He is now an avid reader, author and poet. It's never too late to achieve and learn.

5/9/23 Assessment Results:
MAZE Reading Comprehension passage (9-B - end of 9th grade) assessment, Cameron scored a 100% by making zero errors in word selection. This indicates that he is meeting the benchmark for reading comprehension at the 9th grade level. This does not indicate that his independent reading level IS at the 9th grade level but it does indicate that he can understand and use words in context at the 9th grade level.
I also gave him the San Diego Quick Assessment of Readability. This assessment gives an approximation for independent, instructional, and frustration level for reading ability. Cameron placed at the 8th grade level for independent reading (1 error), 9th grade for instructional (2 errors), and 10th grade for frustration level (3 errors).
These results indicate a lack of need for further testing. My recommendation is that in 10th grade, Cameron should continue receiving supports in English II, but he does not need intensive reading as an intervention class period.
Today he learned about the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. We watched a video about why we celebrate it in the United States and then he answered some questions.
In today's class, we continued our discussion on anatomy and physiology, including talking about the skeletal system. We went over what comprises the skeletal system, the functions of it, and the classification of bones. We also discussed spongy vs compact bone.
