Liam reviewed daily orientation skills and completed an activity sheet tasking him with identifying the day, date, time, weather, and lastly, to indicate how he's feeling. We discussed that the clocks are going to change on Sunday and that we will gain an hour. Liam ended the session noticing the several super-silly differences in a 'Wacky Wednesday' Dr. Seuss video. Liam was a very observant, cooperative, and active learner in today's session.

Liam began his session today by using his glossary skills to look up his new vocabulary words and write the words and their definitions into his notebook. We discussed the use of guide words at the top of the glossary pages and how they help us to locate the vocabulary words. Once he had a good understanding of his new words we began reading the story, "The Roadrunner's Dance." We discussed the use of the 's in the title, noting that the 's shows ownership. We discussed that this story is a folktale which is similar to a fairy tale. He understood that the story is not real, but make believe. As we read the story, we looked for the vocabulary words, the story details, the lesson to be learned from the folktale, and the many characters. We discussed the meaning of a bully, and determined that the rattlesnake was the bully in this story. He learned that when people work together they can solve problems. He also decided that the roadrunner was the hero of the story.

Liam imaged, read, spelled, and manipulated sounds in complex syllables with common final blends and plurals. He fluently read a list of 20 VCC syllables with multiple changes from one to the next and used those patterns in writing two sentences.

Liam reviewed his vocabulary words and their definitions that he had written in his notebook. He read the story, "A Mountain of History." We discussed the importance of monuments, and why societies build them. He answered in writing reading comprehension questions pertinent to the story. We discussed the meaning of compound words and how they are used in sentences. He wrote the definition of a compound word with examples in his notebook. He then completed an activity about compound words demonstrating his understanding of the words. He read another reading comprehension story about a Navajo code talker from World War II. We discussed the reasons why this Native American was a hero, and how his language saved lives during the war. He answered comprehension questions in his notebook about the story.

Liam imaged, read, and manipulated sounds in complex syllables containing short vowels, double vowels, vowel + r, diphthongs, and y as ie. He read a list of 20 CCV syllables making one change in each. Finally, he read a 400-word grade-level passage and answered single-detail questions.

Today was Halloween so we celebrated by watching a costume parade. Liam was an awesome director! We reviewed calendar skills in class today.

Liam completed a reading comprehension activity about a Native American, Joseph Bruchac. He answered in writing comprehension questions about the story. He used the technique of going back into the story to find and underline the correct answer. He read a second reading comprehension story where he had to put the story details in the proper order. He was very confident in doing this. We continued our investigation of the sounds hard c and g make, as well as, soft g and c. He has a very good understanding of this concept. He reviewed his short e spelling words, and completed several activities using these words.

Liam visualized, read, and manipulated sounds in syllables containing short vowels, two vowels, vowel +r, diphthongs, and y ( as ie sound). He completed Lesson 3.1 in the Seeing Stars decoding workbook with 100% accuracy.
