Why Do We Need Rules? Marina wisely responded that we need rules to protect people from crimes and violence. We read the branches of the our Government. She wrote them down as we read and discussed them. The Executive, Legislative, Judicial Branches. She wrote the down the responsibility of each branch as we read and discussed them. Titles and responsibilities of positions held in cities and states: Ethan was introduced to positions held in cities and states. The Mayor an elected position, listens to the citizens, keep the city clean and safe for everyone, City Commissioners, an elected position help the Mayor make decisions concerning police officers, firefighters, and waste collection. A senator represents the state that elected him/her at the federal level. There is a governor an elected official that represents the state that elected him/her. Age of voting is 18. Ethan said," in 10 years I will be able to vote." Bible lesson was also given, Good Job Ethan
Early Documents of the United States: Marina needed to know the early documents of the United States and what they accomplished. Declaration of Independence, Treaty of Ghent, Articles of Confederation, Constitution of the United States, each document molded this new country from a colony to the most powerful country in the world. Marina was shown the significance of these documents.
Bobby took a virtual tour of the major cities in Florida today. We We further explored the lives of Native Americans, Spanish Conquistadors, Henry Flagler and Julia Tuttle.
Today Gwendolyn and I began her Southwest region of the United State project. We began by labeling and coloring a map with the states in this region. Then we constructed a scrapbook for her web field trip through these different states. She will research the 4 different states and put some of the major landmarks into her scrapbook.
Today Stephen and I researched the 2nd president John Adams and created a baseball card containing all his important information. Stephen continues to be very engaged and excited about this project!
Today Gwendolyn finished her final slide for her California PowerPoint. Gwendolyn researched fun facts about California. She then added this information to a slide. She added transitions between each of the slide and showed it to several schoolmates. Great work on your project Gwendolyn.
Strong States, Weak Nation: The new nation first wrote The Articles of Confederation. Finding out that the Articles were not working out well for the new government and appearing weak in view of other countries, that the new nation would not last long. Seeing their error the leaders met at the Constitutional Convention and wrote the US Constitution, making this country the strongest in the world. Marina did well with this lesson, she will write about it next lesson.
Growing Pains of a New Country: Starting a new country was difficult. Marina was introduced to some of the problems that our leaders were confronted with. The 13 States had different opinions what was involved in the making of a country. President George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were able to align the states and the people to come into agreement. It was hard in the beginning yet basically they didn't want a king and they wanted to have the religion of their choosing, and the right to free speech, something that they did not have in England. Today Stephen and I began class by researching Thomas Jefferson. Then Peanut created a baseball card based on Thomas Jefferson's life. He found that Thomas Jefferson was known as the father of the Constitution. Stephen was extremely focused throughout the entire session. Great work today.
