I had a particularly effective session today with Cade. He sequenced the alphabet with ease and built closed, open and silent-e syllables. I conducted visual, auditory and blending drills. Cade seems to be improving with his understanding of silent-e. We played a game of Crazy Moose with closed, open, silent-e, and R-controlled syllables. I dictated detached syllables for Cade to match to make real words. For spelling, I dictated words from yesterday's book, "Will at Bat" such as will, lift, grip, smack, grass. Cade still confuses short e and short i. I dictated the irregular words: his, is, you, what, and do (which he got correct). I dictated two sentences from the book, which Cade independently edited with CAPS. To conclude, I read to him for 10 minutes (Humphrey).

We began with summer reading; I read The World According to Humphrey for 15 minutes and recorded it in Cade's summer reading log. As I read, we paused to practice reading comprehension strategies such as summarizing and making predictions. Next, Cade practiced alphabetic awareness skills (sequencing the alphabet, etc.) I think that he is close to understanding the concept of a syllable. We played a game of Phonics Dice to solidify closed, open, and silent-e syllables. For oral reading fluency, Cade read two decodable books, "I Like Soccer" and "Will at Bat." I dictated sentences from the book for Cade to write and edit using the acronym CAPS. I used Elkonian boxes to help Cade identify the sounds in words (such as "grip"). This proved to be an effective strategy.

Luna was 15 minutes late. For alphabetic awareness, Luna sequenced the alphabet (1:42), identified the vowels and built CVC syllables. I conducted visual and blending drills (all letters and digraphs). Next, Luna practiced syllable division with two and three syllable words with closed syllables. She really enjoys the task! I dictated detached syllables for her to match to make real words. To conclude, we played a board game, "Is it a noun or a verb?"

After alphabetic awareness, I conducted visual, auditory, and blending drills. Luna syllabicated two-syllable VCCV words (Recipe for Reading, p. 85-86) and I dictated three sentences. I reviewed the open syllable and we played Connect 4 with closed and open syllables to reinforce the concept. To conclude, Luna read two decodable texts from FlyLeaf Publishing.

summer reading
Lesson Outline
Sasha arrived today with her summer reading assignment, "Reading Bingo," which is comprised of 25 reading challenges to be completed over the summer. We glued the card to the front of a pocket folder, and put a reading log inside so that Sasha can easily keep track of what she reads. We then read one non-fiction book and started a fantasy graphic novel, effectively checking off two squares! Great work, Sasha. I hope that you have a great summer!

end of year evaluation
Lesson Outline
I re-tested Sasha with the QPS-6 (Quick Phonics Screener). I am pleased with the progress that she made, particularly in her automaticity of decoding. I showed Sasha the comparison of her October and May testing. With time remaining we read several short stories from her RazKids site for school credit.

Lesson Comments
Sasha did make gains, but would really benefit from more intensive OG, as well as a formal educational evaluation.
