The session began with vocabulary building. Bobby was asked to read various sets of words and identify the synonym pairs in each set. Unfamiliar words were discussed to ensure comprehension. Time was spent editing the car essay that Bobby wrote. After he read a short selection about stormy weather he was asked to visualize and discuss it. Bobby also spent some time working on a 3-D puzzle.
This afternoon Bobby and I reviewed the problems on page 336 and practiced identifying corresponding shapes and then setting up the appropriate proportion. We finished problems 23-24 with little difficulty. Homework is to complete #'s 7-15 and 1-4 on pages 336 and 337.
Bobby selected a new topic to address in a 5-paragraph length essay, and he organized his response using a graphic organizer. He selected a topic that asked him to finish the following sentence: I am the only one at this school who ____. He selected three experiences and skills that make him unique, and he began writing the introduction to the essay and the first body paragraph. He also worked on some exercises online, identifying elements that make sentences sound more formal and correcting common errors in different types of texts, and then we applied those processes to improve one of the paragraphs that he wrote today.
We also played a game with a ball containing common errors (they're vs. their, for example) and invented sentences with each one, and discussed some options for literary texts to read next. Bobby said that he would be interested in short stories that are scary or suspenseful.
Bobby started the session responding to a free-write prompt, and then we reviewed the vocabulary terms that he highlighted in the readings from last class. He demonstrated the meaning of each word in a sentence, and he will study those for a quiz on Friday. We also reviewed the content of the articles from last week, and Bobby wrote a paragraph stating his own opinion on the topic (whether or not corporations should be held responsible for the use of their products while users are driving). While the paragraph was well structured, there were several grammatical errors in his text, which we worked together to edit.
Student: Bobby Morris
Teacher: Ms. Nicole Rieman
Subject: Intensive Writing
Time: 09:00 - 10:00 am
I received an assignment from Linda to continue on with Bobby's writing. He was assigned a compare/contrast writing assignment based off of a brainstorming worksheet. Bobby set to his task immediately continuing on with brainstorming and transitioning into a full page and a half of writing. He was (as always) positive and engaged throughout. He wrote about 1.5 pages on the similarities and differences between the Lamborghini and the Mclaren sports cars. As cars are one of his favorite topics, he had quite a lot of information and wrote an objective summary of the similarities and differences of both cars. We reviewed his writing and I then asked him to edit his own work (he used a blue marker) to begin learning how to self-edit and critique, which he did until the end of class. Bobby did a great job today and was diligent in his work.
Paragraph Writing, Vocabulary Development, and 3D Puzzle
Lesson Outline
Bobby and the instructor went over a short essay he wrote comparing two sports cars. Editing will start at the next session. He wrote a good first draft. New vocabulary words were presented and discussed. Bobby had to identify the correct synonyms for each of the words. Some of the class time was spent starting a three dimensional puzzle of Big Ben.
This afternoon Bobby and I reviewed the parameters and expectations for a digital presentation on arachnids. This presentation is summarized in a handout that Bobby has in his possession which outlines those topics that must be included in the body of his powerpoint presentation. His homework tonight is to do 30 minutes of research on the evolution of arachnids and invertebrates. This assignment is due a week from this Friday.
This afternoon Bobby and I continued our study of Sparta and Athens and the long tradition of warfare that existed. We studied the requirement that all boys and older men served in the army while women enjoyed very few rights and were required to stay home. We reviewed the homework whereby Bobby was asked to redo problem #4. Read pages 298-303 #'s 1-5
This morning Bobby and I practiced the problems found on pages 334-335. Bobby performed well by solving these basic proportions. We completed problems 18-21 and 23-24 before concluding class. We will continue with our review of chapter six at the next class.
