Lesson Comments
Joshua understands the big picture of texts much easier than the details. He does quite well explaining how the author organizes his/her ideas and can identify the method of development when looking at the list of options. He is not as successful in identifying the method when a list of options is not in front of him. Joshua answered 21/23 questions correctly today. New words we discussed from the text include: expiation, exigency, and perplexed.

Lesson Comments
Josh continues to read out loud even though he is asked to read in his head. I think this makes it easier for him when it comes to answering the comprehension questions. We wrote more words into his book that he did not know or spelled incorrectly. Josh appeared quite calm doing his first practice test and did well. Josh was also given sentences where he had to put in the appropriate punctuation marks where needed. He also had to correct the spelling. Josh did well but has a habit of using upper case letters where lower case letters belong.

However, when I read the story to him it was easier for him to describe the main idea to me. We also worked on phonics skills. Josh was asked to put a group of words in alphabetical order. He had trouble doing this at first but was able to understand his mistakes once he was shown the right way. Josh's handwriting is improving from session to session.

It is still helpful for Josh to use the pencil as he reads to help him keep track of where he is in the story. We have begun to work on rules that he will need to both write and read with. Lesson Comments
Josh gave great examples of synthesizing information. He was also able to pick out the differences between facts and opinions with some help. We wrote several vocabulary and spelling words in his book, which he will later be tested on. After reading the story on Giant's Josh had a bit of a problem with the main idea questions, however he did well on the rest. Josh did well with assistance with correcting his summary of the story he read. Finally, we worked on patterns of words in spelling. Josh needs to go back and review some of the spelling rules. As always Josh worked very hard.
