Patrick did a great job in Fast ForWord today. He beat his highest score in 2 language comprehension games! We were both excited! In Linda-mood Bell, he immediately gave me the main idea in his picture to picture activity. He can now read all of the words on his structure cards without looking at the pictures on the wall which have a picture clue beside the word. He is using the correct terminology when describing details. Patrick is beginning to use longer sentences which provide more imagery. Today he described a picture to me, of a red airplane landing. He used structure words like shape, color, and prospective to verbalize what he was looking at. Keep up the great effort, Patrick!
Snack. Patrick reviewed what number combinations make 7. We used math fact cards containing sums of 7 and played memory match with them. After the game, he was able to recall all of the combinations. He was introduced to the part-whole model by looking at a whole of 8 and determining two parts that could be separately removed. He understood this concept and solved 6 problems.
Patrick went on a short e hunt around the school, searching for items that had the short e sound it's name. He independently found desk and shelf, as well as his peers names, Yanuell, Ayden, and Devon. With clues provided, he found red, legos, etc. (I see a color with a short e sound, a toy that you build with, etc.) We identified the characteristics of a book that falls in the nonfiction genre. Patrick was introduced to real topics, a table of contents, photographs with labels and captions, special print and a glossary. As a guided task, he explored through a nonfiction basket of books and identified many of the characteristics in each one. For each real topic that we read, Patrick generated an idea of a topic that would not be real. We created a document on Microsoft Word that included a list of characteristics. He tried to recall as many as he remembered. While he couldn't remember the name of all of the items, he remembered what most of them were for. This will be posted in his room for him to refer to throughout the year.
Finishing the story about planet Neptune. Practicing to read the story, and finishing the "paper planet". Watch the video about each planet in the solar system and discuss their properties. Watch the video about material that planets are made of and discuss.

Lesson Comments
Patrick works hard and today he put a lot effort to type the project-story
Patrick began his L-B session by providing an accurate description in his picture-to-picture lesson. He verbalized the "gestalt" of the picture (a boy riding his skateboard down the sidewalk) successfully. Patrick then gave me a description of what he saw, and I did not have to ask many choice and contrast questions. After he created a picture in my head I then verbalized to him what I had pictured and he modified some of my ideas. He is doing very well, and it is nice to see that he can read almost all of his structure cards now. Keep up the good work Patrick! He continued on in his Fast ForWord program, and we finished a 5 minutes early so he played some of his math game which he has to place numbers in order while being timed. Have a great weekend, Patrick!
I tested Patrick out of Ch1: Identifying numbers to 12 and Ch 2: Ordering numbers to 12 while observing Patrick while we interacted through math games the first two weeks of school. With that said, we began his math book on Ch. 3 instead, Adding. Today, we worked on the concept of Making 6 and 7, word problems containing sums to 6 and 7, and memorizing the math facts that create a sum of 6 and 7. He enjoys memorization and excels at building a good knowledge bank. He is successful at recalling things he has learned. As a warm up, I had him recall the facts that make 10 that he learned the other day. He did so with 100% mastery. Prior to that day, he only knew one. He occasionally has difficulty with counting on, 5+2 5, 6, 7. He will say, "5, 2....and get mixed up) I use a number line for him as a manipulative to see the numbers that come after the one he announces, which helps.
Patrick learned how to alphabetize and record a set of 11 words. Even though this was Patrick's first introduction to alphabetical order, he picked up the concept quickly so we moved to words containing the same first letter, requiring him to look to and compare the second letters of the set of words. As a challenge, he went as far as reading and comparing 5 letter words containing the first same 3 letters. (flat, flash stamp, smack, sand, etc.) He wasn't able to do this completely independently, but did very well with guidance. He completed his first spelling test on short a words. He mastered 8/10, but scored extra points on the challenge word and dictation sentence containing his sight words of the week. He earned a 90/A. The words he missed, both contained the same error. Adding additional sounds that you do not hear in the word when you say it.
