Journal; grammar lesson - review of irregular verbs; story - La guitarra misteriosa
Lesson Outline
***Alexa, the student I have before Chase, was absent today and Chase arrived early - at 11:55. Her lesson normally doesn’t start until 12:30, but since she needs the time, I worked with her beginning at 12:00 to 12:30.
30 minutes - pre-class: I gave Chase a list of regular verbs. She tested herself on the meaning of the verbs and made a word bank of unfamiliar words. Then we reviewed together - possessive adjectives: 3 forms of my, your, his/her, etc.
Normal class time:
25 minutes - Journal. Chase’s journal entry was an enjoyable account of her prom. Her sentence structure was good and she needed only minimal assistance with the vocabulary
30 minutes - grammar - we reviewed the irregular verbs that are in the story she is reading: La Guitarra Misteriosa. Using the work I had prepared, she read the irregular conjugations of each verb and gave a translation.
5 minute break
60 minutes - La Guitarra Misteriosa - Chase read chapters 9 & 10 in Spanish. She identified grammar items, new vocabulary and wrote out the translation to a few sentences that had complicated grammar constructions. She answered the 5 open-ended questions herself and then read them to me. I made only a few corrections to her work.

Sulfur and Phosphorus -
Chase reviewed the sulfur and the phosphorus cycles. She illustrated each cycle starting with the weathering of rocks in the lithosphere. We discussed how these elements react with the atmosphere, and cycle through the biosphere. Finally we examined the manner by which we have disrupted the ecological system and the consequences for these actions. Chase was quizzed on the carbon, water, nitrogen and hydrogen cycles. Homework: Complete illustrations of the five main element cycles in an ecosystem.

Journal; Grammar - direct and indirect object review; story - la guitarra misteriosa
Lesson Outline
25 minutes - Chase has a lot of thoughts to get down in her journal but her Spanish vocabulary is limited. Many times we use synonyms with words she does know. If I supply her with a vocabulary word, she is very good about writing out a translation for that sentence so that she will be able to learn the word.
25 minutes - today we reviewed which words are direct and indirect objects and the rules for their use. Using the story “La Guitarra Misteriosa”, we identified the direct and indirect objects and how to translate them.

65 minutes - Chase is enjoying the reading of this story: La Guitarra Misteriosa. Today she read in Spanish - Chapters 5 & 6; translated them and answered the open-ended questions. Her readings and translations were done after each set of 3 or 4 paragraphs. Chase translates very well. Many times, if there is a word or phrase she is unfamiliar with, she will look ahead to the rest of the sentence or next sentence and figure out what is being said. Most of the time, she is absolutely correct. I then go back to the “missing” word or phrase and give her the meaning. She is very good about writing it down so that she has it for the next time she encounters it. I feel that Chase has responded very positively to learning Spanish by reading stories.

AP Environmental Science:
Aquaponics-
Chase and I added a new fish, and terrestrial plants to her new aqua-terrarium. We added the Plecko fish, which is an algae eater, and will help keep the habitat clean, and not interfere with the beta fish (Fishy). We then planted some philodendron plants to the cover of the aquaponics system, which will convert the ammonia , nitrates and nitrites into usable nitrogen for the fish. This part of the project provided an opportunity to apply what we discussed in our last class; the nitrogen cycle. We used the remainder of the class to work through sample APES test questions.

Chase was challenged with illustrating the various chemical cycles that are important in our world. Starting with the most difficult, we discussed the nitrogen cycle, and the five or six steps that nitrogen goes through while traveling through the atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. We then worked through the carbon, water, and phosphorus cycles. Homework: review notes.
