Baylie had a brief review for her History test today. She took her test on The Great Awakening, The Alamo, and The War With Mexico. She scored a B+ on this test. For the Latin lesson Bailey completed workbook page 91.
We kicked off the morning with spelling. Morgan chose 18 of the 35 words from review list 24 to practice for this week. She wrote the words in her notebook. She picked two words to write sentences and we reviewed those for grammar and spelling. Her bonus word of the week is wrath. We looked this up in the dictionary and she wrote that it means “great anger” on her list. She worked in her spelling book to find hidden words from her list, which were all related to things that could be found in a hardware store. She also filled in the blanks of a “calendar” to help a boy accomplish his tasks for the week with words like lawn, rabbit, and pull. In literature, we continued with our study of fairy tales. Morgan rewrote her write about reading activity in which she summarized the version of Beauty and the Beast as retold by Jan Brett. She did a nice job with her rewrite. We reviewed her work for spelling and grammar. We then completed a Venn Diagram of the Jan Brett version and the version as told by Disney. Morgan did a terrific job comparing and contrasting the stories! We focused primarily on the characters. Next, Morgan and I did shared readings of The Frog Prince and Rumpelstiltskin. We discussed the characters and events of the story. We noticed that in fairy tales, princesses often “weep” instead of “cry” and that very often, if someone is going to do something nice for someone else, they always want something in return! Morgan wrote in her journal today about her weekend. She read it through to edit herself and found a number of mistakes independently! We will review and correct for spelling and grammar in our next session. For Latin today, we reviewed her six vocabulary words. We also wrote in her workbook the meaning of constellations, who created them, and where we can find them. Morgan participated in an online session of Lindamood Bell. They began with finding numbers on an imaginary number line and working back and forth along it to solve equations. She practiced addition, subtraction, and multiplication flashcards. She enjoyed a fun game of multiplication war! Morgan earned a Magical Learning Moment for using jumping to picture tricky facts. She chose the sum/difference of an equation from three equations presented. For reading tasks, she practiced reading from her targeted sight words. These words included difference, although, and complete. Finally, she continued reading in her Anne of Green Gables chapter book.
Baylie had a vocabulary and gender rules review for Latin today. She also completed workbook page 89. For History, there was a review of The Great Awakening, The Mexican War, and The Alamo. There will be a history test on Tuesday. Vocabulary words were presented for the Science lesson. Baylie made flash cards for each of the words. Previous vocabulary words were reviewed.
BIBLE:--9:30-10:00--Isaiah 40:31A-- I read passage Isaiah 40:27-30. The focus of this passage was that G-d does not grow weary or tired, but we do because we are human. Macy ran in place for two minutes and noted that she was breathing harder and her heartbeat had increased. We discussed how we can trust G-d to "lift us up" (feel better) when we are feeling sad. We watched a short video titled "Isaiah 40:31 Kid's Song. MATH--10-11:00--Macy completed page 57B of her workbook. This page was a mixed review *Fill in missing numbers such as --- 62 --- --- --- --- --- 68 --- --- *the concept of one half *time to the hour *count by 2s to 20... She also completed page 58. The focus was on adding 1 to a number, subtracting 1, and a review of facts. We then discussed even and odd numbers, first using "counting bears," so Macy could "see" even and odd. I then wrote 0 2 4 6 8 Under this I wrote 1-- 1-- 1-- 1-- 1-- Macy filled in the numbers 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 We continued this way until we reached 100. We followed the same procedure for odd numbers, beginning with me writing 1 3 5 7 9 11:00-11:45--SOCIAL STUDIES/WRITING-- Macy's assignment was to write about the White House. First, we talked about what she already knew. We then looked at pictures of the White House. We learned some fun facts along the way, such as the White House has 132 rooms.Next, we located Washington, D.C. on a map of the United States. We created a "word bank" for Macy to use as she wrote her story. 11:45-12:00--READING--Macy read the book, "I Do Read."

Macy gave 100% effort during our time together. The only concept she had a bit of difficulty with was counting by 2s, beginning with the number 1..odd numbers
This morning we began with a quick oral review of some of Morgan’s list 23 spelling words. We then took the test. Morgan did a terrific job spelling 9 of her 10 words correctly. She independently corrected the word does once she had been informed it was incorrect. She got her two vocabulary words and the bonus word correct. For grammar, Morgan continued a practice of singular and plural nouns. She provided the missing version of each word as only the singular or plural was provided. She then read sentences and in 5 sentences worked to change the noun (and any necessary words) from singular to plural and in 5 different sentences, do the opposite by changing the plural noun to singular. Morgan did a nice job and only needed a little help with the verb agreement on two occasions. We are still working on capitalization and end punctuation in her writing. For our fairy tales unit in literature, Morgan and I read, Beauty and the Beast as retold by Jan Brett. We discussed the events and the characters as we read. We also discussed vocabulary concepts such as dissuade, implored, and midst. After reading the story, I prompted Morgan through recall of the story through writing. We worked on writing informational sentences (without dialogue) to talk about the major events in the story sequentially. As we worked through our sentences, we focused on proper sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Morgan then read a Disney publication of the same story. We will compare and contrast the two stories in our next session. For the last few minutes of our morning session, Morgan matched the pictures of her six constellations to their Latin and English meanings. We finished up the day with an online Lindamood Bell session. In her session, Morgan practiced finding numbers on an imaginary number line, counting backwards from a higher point on this number line (0 - 50), counting back by 5s and 10s on unusual parts of the number line (for example 26 to 21), and visualizing adding and subtracting on the number line. Morgan earned a Magical Learning Moment for her amazing work of jumping up and down on the number line. She continued with math activities by practicing addition and subtraction flashcards as well as multiplication problems presented orally and through a game of war. She practiced reading her targeted sight word flashcards and more of her Anne of Green Gables chapter book.
Baylie worked on gender rules, Latin vocabulary, and translations today. She completed the vocabulary pages from her textbook and all of the workbook pages. She did a fantastic job on translations and remembering the gender rules.
BIBLE: Macy listened to a story about David and Saul. We noted that the moral was that David made mistakes in his life and faced many challenges, but he never stopped serving G-d. Macy answered questions such as "Why did Saul want to kill David?" "Why did David refuse to kill Saul?" We watched a few short videos: "David and His Harp" "David and Saul" "Saul Becomes Jealous of David" MATH: We explored the calendar, using the month of February. Macy knew there were 7 days in a week and she stated them. She knew there were 12 months and she stated them. Macy completed page 55 of her workbook, which was a mixed review...the number 50...addition and subtraction word problems, which involved drawing a picture and writing an equation...the fraction "one half"...pennies...count by twos to twenty...fill in missing numbers---for example: --- --- 43 --- --- --- 47 --- --- 50 Macy also completed a "Fact Assessment." which included subtracting zero, subtracting one, differences of zero, sums to 16 LANGUAGE ARTS: Macy completed page 150 of her workbook, "Writing with Phonics." This involved reading sentences, tracing them, and then printing them on her own. She then worked on pages 157 and 158 of her workbook, "Letters and Sounds." Page 157 involved circling "special sounds" in words and then marking the vowel in that word either "short" or "long." The "special sounds" included sl, sn, ck, dr, fl, sh, th, cr, sp, mp, and dr. Page 158 involved working with short vowels, sk, cl, and tr. Macy wrote a short story titled "Our Flag." She had previously colored in a picture of a flag. We talked about the number of stars, the number of stripes, and the colors of the flag before Macy began writing. Our time together concluded with Macy reading her "February Dolch Words." every, fly, from, give, going, had, has, her, him, his, how, just...

Macy was a delight to work with. She completed her work with ease.
This morning Morgan practiced her list 23 spelling words in a practice test format. For Thrilling Thursday, she practiced by writing them on the wipe board instead of in her notebook. She had difficulties with friend, horrible, and guard, so we practiced those several extra times. We continued working on her fable writing. We finished the revising and editing phase for Morgan’s story, The Octopus and the Dolphin. She wrote her final copy and illustrated a picture to accompany her story. For grammar practice, Morgan completed a multi-tasked activity. She corrected two sentences for capitalization and punctuation. She also practiced writing sentences with the sight words always, around, because, and been. We worked through each sentence for structure, spelling, and grammar. For example, her sentence for because was technically three sentences of dialogue, but was written as one sentence. We looked at various other simpler ideas for use of the word. Additionally, we practiced using singular and plural nouns. In writing, we continued working on Morgan’s own fable. We discussed the moral she had developed for her story and thought further about the idea behind it. In science today, we reviewed lessons 6.1-6.3. In lesson 6.4, we discussed the types of circuits. We read about series circuits which offer only one path for electricity to flow. If one piece becomes negatively affected, everything on this circuit stops working. We also talked about parallel circuits in which there is more than one path of electricity. If a piece gets disconnected, the item can still function. For literature, we began our unit on fairy tales. We discussed that fairy tales are folktales that take place in a magical setting and feature good and evil characters. From the Grimm’s Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, we read The Fisherman and his Wife. We read about the fisherman’s greedy wife who kept making her husband ask the king fish in the sea for more and more power. We saw how the sea became upset and at her final request to be the Lord of the Sun and Moon, we saw that the king fish then just took everything away. We then read The Golden Goose. We read how the simplest of three boys was rewarded with a golden goose, which led to a princess bride due to his showing kindness and sharing with a little old man. We discussed both stories for comprehension and recall. Morgan did a great job with these fairy tales. Finally, we began Latin lesson 16. This lesson focuses on the constellations. We read that constellations are groups of stars that form pictures in the sky. These myths were by the very early Greek and Roman civilizations. Scientists and sailors use them to map the sky. The vocabulary for this unit is: Aquarius, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, and Virgo.
The session began with a review of lessons 13, 14, 15, and 16. Baylie had an excellent review. She then took a test on the concepts from these lessons. She had a near perfect score. Nice going, Baylie!
