Kelcy practiced finding the area of given shapes by breaking the shape apart, determining the area of each part and then adding the areas. He also spent 15 minutes on Math I-Ready practicing making equivalent fractions using a number line.
Kelcy worked hard on a reading quiz on connecting ideas in paragraphs. He proofread a passage and corrected incorrect comparative adjectives. Additionally he created and wrote sentences using adjectives that ended in -er and -est.
Kip is a delightful student. We started the session by exploring his Google Classroom, and printing his assignments for the day. We discovered Quizlet in his Religion class. We spent a good part of the morning mastering the concepts and vocabulary to prepare him for his upcoming assessment. Next, we tackled his math assignments. Today, was lesson 16, part 2: Finding Area of Combined Shapes. Kip has good understanding & problem solving skills. He also scored 100% on his one minute division drill today. Additionally, he spent time on iready math reinforcing fractions on a number line again today. I noticed a big improvement in his confidence today. For reading, Kip read two persuasive passages. One persuading readers that schools should replace paper books with ebooks, and the other convincing readers not to. Kip demonstrates qualities of a good reader. He stretches out unknown words, reads with fluency, and asks clarifying questions to deepen his understanding. I told Kip he was a good reader and he said, "I am?". There were corresponding questions to answer again today, and he did a wonderful job responding and using evidence from the text to support his answers. Finally, there was a page in his vocabulary book to complete. He was given words and had to identify (or infer)the meaning. Kip scored 100% independently, and we ended the session on a very high note! I hope to work with Kip again in the future!
Kip completed his assignment assigned by his teacher in New Jersey. Kip read in his textbook about Frederick Law Olmsted. He identified his beginning life and famous achievements. Kip identified the importance of his design in Central Park. Kip answered questions in the textbook that followed his reading.
iReady, vocabular, religion, math-area, social studies, opinion writing
Lesson Outline
Kip and I began our session with submitting the assignments completed this week thus far. Kip completed fifteen minutes of reading iReady. Kip completed a vocabulary activity, finding context clues to find the definition of the vocabulary words learned this week. We took turns reading aloud a religion reading, "The Eucharist is the heart of the church's life". We watched a video introducing area & perimeter of irregular shapes. Kip then completed math workbook pages, 347-350, finding the area of irregular shapes. He completed a 1 minute drill division practice. Kip completed fifteen minutes of math iReady. For social studies, we read aloud, "Rural Communities" and answered questions pertaining to the reading. We watched a video introducing opinion writing using the 'OREO' method (opinion, reasons, evidence/examples, opinion) and how to write an introduction. Kip began & completed writing his introduction for his opinion piece on soccer.

Kip is attending school during Spring Break so that way he does not get behind on Google Classroom assignments. He did so well this week!
Kip was a pleasure to work with today! We began our session picking up a reading activity started by his teacher. He has already read two passages prior to my arrival. Then, together,he answered a series of comprehension questions to compare and contrast the two articles. We went back to the text to find evidence that would support his answers. I noticed how patient and thoughtful he was with his answers, despite the fact that he had a green milkshake waiting for him in the kitchen. Some of his responses were multiple choice, and some were short answer. Kip took his time to select the best choices and write his responses. Next, we completed math lesson 17: Adding Area. I could tell Kip already had a good understanding of finding area, so applying this new skill came easily for him. He simply had to add the areas of two rectangles to find the total area of a shape. He did very well. Next, Kip did a segment of iready, a computer based learning game. He had 15 minutes to solve a variety of questions involving fractions on a number line, which was review. This presented a little more of a challenge as the fractions became greater than one, but about 1/2 way through he said, "I get it now!" and finished with 83% accuracy. After that, Kip had a division drill. He scored 18/20 (90%) in one minute and 20 seconds. Multiples of 12 slowed him down. The last part of our session was to watch a Science video in Google Classroom, titled, "Where Can You Find Whales in the Desert? Kip was very skeptical of this, but fascinated to learn about all the oceanic fossils that have been discovered in the midwest. It opened a lot of dialogue and questions he had about the possibilities and changes that have occurred on Earth. We had a few minutes left in our session, so Kip challenged me to a game of Chess! He was very good, and he taught me with patience. Then, he enjoyed beating me in the end. It was super fun! Can't wait to work with Kip again tomorrow.
iReady, vocabulary, reading & questions on comparing and contrasting texts
Lesson Outline
Kip and I began our session with Kip completing fifteen minutes of reading iReady. Kip then completed a vocabulary activity, choosing the correct vocabulary word to fill in the sentence. We then read aloud a reading, "History of Television" and began answering questions and a short response focusing on comparing and contrasting texts. We did not complete this activity, thus the activity will be completed with his next teacher.

Kip is attending school during Spring Break so that way he does not get behind with work from Saint Catharine School. I also completed a teacher recommendation form for Kip. Ms. Jessica completed the reading activity with him.
Social Studies – Social text book Lesson 1 – Urban Communities – We reviewed this lesson and moved on to Lesson 2 – Suburban Communities pages 52-55. As we read he answered all questions in his textbook and completed a VENN diagram comparing and contrasting the two.
Kip and I began our session with Kip completing fifteen minutes of reading iReady. I then read aloud our religion reading, 'In Baptism we are born to a new life in Christ'. Kip then completed vocabulary pages 82-83, matching the word to the correct definition and working on synonyms & antonyms for the new vocabulary words. We ended our session with a reading, "A Short History of Computers" and "Computers Today", and then completing a graphic organizer and short response on comparing and contrasting the two texts.
