Matthew was led through a discussion in Spanish. He did a great job responding at least 33% of the time in Spanish. His comprehension of spoken Spanish continues to grow.
He then led us through a review of the last class. Every part of his review was said in Spanish though he did say some of ideas in English first. He is consistently speaking more Spanish.
We took a quiz on Spanish vocabulary for the week.
He then did a translation of the text that we prepped yesterday. We prepared a new section of text for the next class. We discussed how much of this work is done by those creating the curriculum in Spanish 1 and 2 but how the responsibility will continue to shift towards him as he approaches college Spanish and Spanish outside the classroom.
These skills will prepare him to be successful in the language independent of where he goes from here.
Matthew was shown the expected level of analysis that should occur when he approaches a text in this class.
We read a couple of pages in a book. We highlighted every unknown word. We looked up its definition. We identified all of the tenses and conjugations. We identified idioms and expressions.
Matthew then took a quiz on one of the passages in the book.
He did very well.
We then read an article on a Spanish website that reviews different texts on the subject of Golf.
We started the day with a quick review of the chapter.
Our review today focused heavily on the readings that we had done in the course of completing the chapter. We had read about the trains in Panama, Mexico, and Spain. These readings also went beyond just the train and highlighted historical, cultural, and geographical items of significance.
Today, Bella was given time to study for her upcoming quiz on the 55 essential verbs.
She was then given time to work on her Spanish quiz project. She had questions about the quiz's 60 reflexive verbs. I helped her to build her confidence by providing diminishing supports throughout the activity and asking comprehension questions.
Bella was given a brief amount of time to self-assess her current level of comfort with the verbs on her list.
She was then quizzed on the portion of the verbs with which she was most familiar. She will be quizzed at the end of this week on the section of verbs with which she was least familiar.
We discussed technology issues that have presented themselves for her Spanish Quiz Project. We brainstormed some solutions. We arrived at a solution that is not as ideal as the original plan but a beneficial new plan.
Matthew was charged today with teaching me the information from the prior two lessons. He did a good job, but mentioned that he could use practice teaching.
He taught each of the major points of the lesson.
Matthew was then given an opportunity to use various sentence formats to express similar ideas with unique word patterns.
Bella and I reviewed her progress on her Spanish Quiz Project. She should continue to work on her quizzes daily so as to finish in a timely manner.
We then covered the material for the quiz that she will have early next week and then on the last day of the week. It is a lot of material. She should study.
Bella was then introduced to the concept of the subjunctive. We discussed the different rates of use of this mood amongst English and Spanish. We previewed some of the material that we learned this year in regards to this topic.
