We built on yesterday’s lesson. Matthew was presented a review of the new class of subjunctive triggers. He was then asked to write additional sentences using the subjunctive. He was told the type of material that may be present on this week’s quiz.
We worked on the translation of a song that extensively uses the subjunctive.
Today we reviewed the broad categories of Subjunctive Triggers that we already have covered.
We then added a new trigger for the Subjunctive in Spanish: Impersonal Expressions. Matthew was taught the general formula and was told some of the expressions he is most likely to encounter. Matthew was then given an opportunity to create some of his own sentences using this principle.
Matthew led us through our daily review. He attempted every single sentence of the review in Spanish. This is a big milestone in our progression toward an all Spanish daily review.
Matthew then summarized the critical elements of the subjunctive.
He viewed several videos on YouTube that teach the subjunctive. We made notes detailing the pros and cons of the videos that we viewed.
Matthew then did a some storyboarding of his own video. His ideas had to do with animation and drawing. We will speak with the art teachers at The Batt School to see if these ideas will be within reach for us.
We finished by listening to a song that is full of subjunctive conjugations.
Matthew reviewed with me the work that he had done in my absence.
I hope he has a speedy recovery.
Matthew then worked on creating a plan for his "Teaching the Subjunctive" video project. He did a wonderful job. We focused on getting creative and not letting budget or other real-world constraints restrict us in this first session.
Matthew had some wonderful ideas for shot locations. We discussed ways in which the visual elements of our video could work to bolster the principles that we will be teaching.
Matthew and I then visited the school library so that he could choose a text to read in Spanish.
He then read several pages of the text. We discussed the conjugations that he recognized. We discussed familiar vocabulary.
This reading was intended to be more of an introduction and deal in broad strokes. Matthew understood that. However, he was eager to dive into the text and interpret it.
So, Matthew worked on the translation of the text. We discussed the new vocabulary and the new conjugations.
Cabo and I reviewed the results of his quiz. We spoke about the areas where he did well. We also reviewed the content that could have been on the quiz but was not. We made it very clear that he needs to know each of the nine irregulars from this section for the upcoming test.
We also spoke about how to best prepare for the test.
Began with a review of the last class. Read the lesson on Subjunctive 2 on studyspanish.com. Completed basic quiz on Subjunctive 2. Matt did well on the quiz and got 18 out of 20 questions correct!
