Jonathan continued practice on word problems to refine his skills. He was reminded that a word problem is a situation explained in words that can be solved using math. He recognizes that teen numbers can be decomposed and composed, and that the lesser number is the one decomposed. Jonathan solved 9 out of 10 word problems correctly, or 90% correct, demonstrating a good aability to reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Religion: Today we reviewed Lent and taking this time to grow closer to Jesus. We took turns coloring 40 segments on a picture of a stained-glass cross. With each segment we colored, we named a way we could get closer to Jesus. This included things such as telling the truth, praying before a meal, spreading the good news about Jesus, being nice to others, helping Mom, sharing, and using manner words. Language Arts: Jonathan began by working on his writing piece. He finished writing his final paragraph and conclusion. We discussed how to write on the lines and where to stop. He also drew his final illustration. Next, we continued our study of nonfiction text features. We read about headings and the glossary and using a source text, Earthworms, we completed activities about each in his iReady textbook. After lunch and recess, we cooled off with a Brain Pop Jr. learning video entitled, Tenses. This explained how verbs show time. We were shown examples of present, past, and future tense. Jonathan scored 5/5 on the follow up easy quiz and 5/5 on the hard quiz. Next, we talked about homophones. Jonathan completed some sentences choosing the correct word. This included items such as rode/road and paws/pause. We talked about what each word meant, especially past/passed. We enjoyed reading chapters two and three of our novel, Mummies in the Morning. Jonathan needed some help with today’s follow up recall questions. He did a nice job practicing his novel related spelling words. Jonathan ended his session with some time on Reading Eggspress. He began with a story and comprehension questions. We discussed the terms firm and forceful, as well as bellowed. He scored 5/6. The activities of this website are providing a nice challenge for him.
Jonathan continued to work on learning about gravity. We defined gravity as a force that pulls things to the ground. Jonathan worked on exercises in his Daily Science Student Practice book. He learned that gravity pulls things down in a straight line and that it pulls on all things the same way. They fall at the same speed and they land at the same time. He answered the questions correctly and we demonstrated the force of gravity in class using available objects.
Jonathan continued to practice solving differentiated addition and subtraction word problems. He demonstrates a good ability to understand the necessary operations needed to solve the problems and is able to present his answer in 4 ways: number lines, number bonds, equations, and number sentences. Jonathan favors working with equations and adds or subtracts in his head; however, when asked to check his work, he often finds an error he's made in his calculations due to his haste wanting to complete it; therefore reminders remain necessary to improve his accuracy and performance. Today, while working on practice examples, Jonathan said, "I don't even have to read the stories, I just have to look at the numbers in order to solve it." He is confident in his abilities and acquires skills fast, but needs reminders to work slower or to check his work before handing it in.
Jonathan was given his canvas along with paint, and instructed to paint the next Pokemon on his canvas. I assisted him by painting red and yellow as he painted the black, white and blue sections of the Pokemon character. As the areas were drying we went over previously painted areas with a second coat of paint.

We warmed up with rudimental strokes, and then practiced the coordination necessary to play the basic rock beat. We then worked on some hand rhythms and fills around the drum set.
Language arts: Jonathan took his whole book assessment for our novel study, The Knight at Dawn. He scored 12/12 on this lengthy multiple-choice exam. Next, we continued working on the publication of his snowy day themed story. Jonathan illustrated page 4 and also wrote pages 3 - 5 for his final copy. As he was writing, he decided he wanted to make some changes, so we actually stopped for some revisions on page 4 along the way. Today we began Jonathan’s non-fiction unit. We read about headings, table of contents, and glossary. We practiced using a table of contents in his iReady textbook with one of our source books, Earthworms. We enjoyed a Brain Pop Jr. learning video on reading nonfiction books. On the follow up quizzes, he scored 5/5 on the easy and 5/5 on the hard quiz (with help). Jonathan was excited to start our new novel, Mummies in the Morning (Magic Tree House #3) today. We read through chapter 1 and answered the questions in our follow up reader’s response packet. Jonathan took his spelling pretest for a word list related to this novel. This was a nice, challenging list for him with words including mirage, pyramid, symbols, and tomb. Religion: Today we began the unit on Lent. We read about how the Church gets ready to celebrate Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. Jonathan said a prayer to himself to thank Jesus for sharing his life with him.
Geography and Cardinal Directions/Compass/Cultures of the World
Lesson Outline
Jonathan and I looked at a globe and reviewed the four cardinal directions and their abbreviations. We then listenend to "It's a Small World After All" and discussed the lyrics. We noted that although the world is big and there are many different continents, countries, people and cultures, we all share the same sun and moon, and a smile universally means one is happy. As we identified different continents on the globe, Jonathan was tasked with questions pertaining to directions. He did well on this activity. We then learned what a compass rose was and found the circle on a map showing the principal directions. We also used a compass to find out what directions we were walking in around campus. We finished our session playing a game of Cardinal Direction Simple Simon; Jonathan is clearly a pro at this game and demonstrated a clear understanding of directionality.
Jonathan took a short assessment and achieved 100% correct. He then practiced solving word problems to 20. We focused on the wording of the problems, "more than," and "less than" to guide our undersanding of which operations are involved. Jonathan has demonstrated good number sense and satisfactorily understands the language of word problems, using his fingers to add and subtract. We ended the session making up our own word problem and solving it.
