After reviewing Atticus' homework, I noted numerous spelling errors. As such, we briefly discussed the use of prefixes such as "pre and dis" as an aid to spelling. Based on the homework, I further reviewed the proper use of " too, to , and two" as well as "their and there." We then read and discussed Martin Niemoller's famous quote "First they came for the socialists and I did not speak out etc." and applied the quote to the events in the novel. Last, Atticus completed an analogy exercise based on the novel's vocabulary . He did very well in analyzing the Niemoller quote and in understanding the concept of word analogies.
Atticus began class with a jump rope warmup. Next, he participated in a fun, high energy game of soccer, focusing on kicking the ball into a designated goal.
Atticus began with last night's homework, completing conversions of metric units using the conversion rate to find an equivalent rate or using dimensional analysis. Then, we looked at how to relate customary and metric units. Using an approximate equivalency table, Atticus solved real-world conversion scenarios with metric to customary, customary to metric, and 2-step conversions. Atticus was assigned the lesson's practice and problem-solving questions for homework.
Atticus delved into Greek Mythology, as he read an article on Persephone. He then completed an activity identifying the 12 major Greek Gods. He also learned why each one is special. He learned that Greece is a peninsula, that Mount Olympus is a real place in northern Greece, olives are an important crop, and that the Greek religion was polytheistic.
Atticus performed the lab, "Transferring Temperatures." This lab explored how thermal energy transfers from an area of high concentration of thermal energy to an area of low concentration of thermal energy. We placed a hot water beaker into a cold water beaker, measuring the before and after temperatures of the water. He answered the follow up questions identifying patterns in the data and inferring the direction of energy transfer.
Atticus completed a textual support exercise during today's class. After I distributed a list of five thematic statements, Atticus prepared written responses that identified textual support for each theme ,including direct quotes from the novel. Where necessary , I assisted Atticus in locating direct quotes. We additionally reviewed last night's homework and made necessary spelling corrections.
This morning, Atticus took the math section from the practice Stanford Achievement Test to prepare for next week's testing. Then, we reviewed his skills review homework on solving unit rate problems and converting customary units of measurement. Atticus finished with a review on finding the area of trapezoids and tonight's homework was assigned on converting metric units.
