Baylie is very organized and uses her time wisely.
Today's lesson focused on the spread of Christianity in the fourth century. With the use of text and videos, Hunter learned about the Roman Emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity, including the reasons for same, and the relocation of the imperial capital from Rome to Byzantium, which Constantine promptly renamed Constantinople. Additionally, Hunter learned about Christian monks, including those who lived in monasteries and those who lived as hermits. After each video, Hunter was required to take notes, and he participated in discussion.
Today we resumed studying early Christianity. The lesson addressed the spread of Christianity following the death of Jesus, the perceived threat posed by Jesus' teachings (asserting the spiritual equality of all) to the Roman Empire's hierarchy, the Great Schism into Eastern and Western churches (the former called "Orthodox," the latter called "Roman Catholic"), and the Western church's eventual splintering into Protestant and Catholic denominations. Hunter was instructed via text and videos, and he was required to take notes.
Today I began by returning Hunter's graded test from Monday, 4/21, and went over it with him. Because he performed so poorly on the test (61/100), I elected to administer a re-test on the same material. (Before class, I conferred with Johanna and obtained her consent in this matter.) Hunter was given yet another opportunity to review his notes and to ask questions, whereupon the re-test was administered. I graded the re-test before session end. Hunter earned a 95/100, which is the sole score that will be entered for this test.
Today Hunter was given ample time to review his notes from classes since the last test in order to prepare for today's test. The test was then administered. In the short time remaining, we began consideration of the historical origins of Christianity. Hunter was required to take notes.

Hunter informed me today that the only JBP teachers who give him tests are his math teacher and me.
Today's lesson addressed the classes of society in ancient Rome: patricians, plebeians, and slaves. The widening gulf between rich and poor, and the acquisition of slaves via military conquest, were among the issues raised. Hunter took notes after each video and participated in discussion. We also discussed the fact that, because tomorrow is a school holiday, the next test will be administered on Monday, 4/21.
Today's lesson focused on Augustus Caesar, whom the Roman Senate granted absolute power for life. His dispensation of patronage to solidify loyalty among soldiers, and his use of gladiator competitions to entertain the public, were addressed, and the term "Pax Romana" was defined. When questioned, Hunter figured out that the life of Jesus coincided with part of Augustus' reign. I was pleased with Hunter's level of engagement today. He took good notes, too.
Today I returned Hunter's graded test (83/100) from last Friday and went over it with him. We then took up the subject of Rome's transition from a republic to an empire, including the difference between the two forms of government. Particular emphasis was placed on Julius Caesar, his conquest of Gaul, and his assassination by Roman Senators who resented his acquisition of power. After each video, Hunter was required to take notes. No cell phone use was permitted, without objection.
