My goal for today's math review is to complete Sophia's summer math review book. The concepts that will be reviewed are word problems, time, money, place value, computation and graphing. I will also include a short Wilson review. I'll have Sophia spell and mark up 8 words that contain all the syllable types that she has been taught over the past 6 weeks. She also read several sentences that she will scoop into appropriate phrases.

We did complete the summer review math book. It took some time because of Sophia's inability to stay on task and activity level. I was real pleased with the Wilson review. Sophia spelled all words correctly and had no difficulty marking up the words and identifying each syllable.
I'll continue with the Wilson's Step 4's Post Testing. Yesterday, Sophia was given a list of 15 words, which she separated into syllables. Today, she will identify the type of syllable or syllables in each word. She'll also take the dictation test. She will spell 15 real words and 5 nonsense words. She is permitted to miss 5 words out of the 20 words dictated. During the math review, I'll try to complete 2 pages.

Lesson Comments
Today's testing went well. Sophia spelled all 20 words correctly. She correctly identified almost all of the syllable types in the list of words. The exception to the closed syllable was the one syllable she didn't instantly recognize. The math review took a lot longer than it should have taken. It took Sophia 40 minutes to complete the 2 pages. It was difficult for her to sit for that long, and she was in a real playful mood, hiding in different rooms when I left to get an item from her room. Sophia again asked to move to a different room so she wouldn't be distracted by the music or singing going on with the little boy who was having his therapy session. Tomorrow, I'll work on getting the math review book completed. We only have 4 or 5 pages to go.
Today's Wilson lesson will include a review of the skills taught in Step 4. After the review, I'll start the Post Test for Step 4. Sophia will be given a list of words that she will have to separate into syllables, identify the words that have the letter "s" making the /z/ sound and reading 14 out of the 15 words correctly. The math review will include completing a page and a half in the review book. I have Sophia working on the math app, Mathopia, for the last 10 minutes of the lesson.

Sophia was very active today. During the Oral Sentence Reading section of the lesson, Sophia has to read 10 sentences and follow a certain procedure. The procedure consists of reading a sentence silently, scoop the words for proper phrasing in the sentence and then read the sentence orally. Sophia could not do these 3 steps together without stopping between each step. When it came time for the math review, Sophia asked to move to a different room where it would be quieter. We did and she was more attentive.
Substep 4.4 Exception to the V-C-E Syllable & Math Review
Lesson Outline
During the 60 minutes that will be devoted to math, I'll have Sophia work for 45 minutes in the math book. Then I'll have her work on the app, Mathtopia, which is an app that helps with math facts. She continues to use her fingers to solve math problems with a sum greater than 5. During the Wilson lesson, I'll have Sophia practice marking up the words that contain the exception to the v-c-e syllable. I'll also provide practice for Sophia to read and spell words with the v-c-e syllable and words that do not contain the exception to the v-c-e syllable.

Lesson Comments
The Wilson lesson went fine. Sophia was a little tired but she did what was asked. Sophia did fine marking the words with the exception to the v-c-e syllable. Tomorrow, Sophia will divide a list of words into the different syllables that they represent, closed, exception to the closed syllable, V-C-E syllable and the exception to the V-C-E syllable. Since Sophia did well today, I'll begin the assessment for Step 4 so that it will be completed by Thursday. Sophia did OK during the math review. We did a page and a half, which was the right amount of work.
Substep 4.4: Introducing the suffix, ive, and spelling words that end with the letter, v
Lesson Outline
At the beginning of the lesson, I will introduce the new suffix, ive, and the new syllable, exception to the v-c-e syllable. Sophia will be shown how to mark the new syllable and be given the clue word and sound of the new suffix. I'll also bring in the new spelling rule, a word never ends with a "v". If the ending sounding of a word is /v/, you add a silent "e" to the end. The vowel will be short. The math review will cover the topics that have been covered in the last several lessons.

Lesson Comments
Sophia did OK during the Wilson lesson. She seemed to grasp the concepts that were introduced and was able to read words with the new elements. During the math review, Sophia was a little argumentative. She insisted that she solved a problem correctly even though the answer was wrong. It took several different explanations before she agreed with me. This behavior and her activity level interfere with her learning how to solve problems with multiple steps.
Substep 4.3: Reading, Spelling and Marking 3 & 4 Syllable Words plus Math Review Session
Lesson Outline
The focus of the Wilson lesson will be fluency when reading words with 3 & 4 syllables. Sophia will be asked to read, spell and mark words that contain a closed and a v-c-e syllable. I'll use words that should be familiar to Sophia, which helps her comprehension. The math review will continue to review the concepts of skip counting, place value, word problems, computation, measurement, time and money.

Lesson Comments
The math review went fine. Sophia was able to complete 2 pages without any problems. Math problems that require more than 1 step to complete cause Sophia some difficulty. It's hard to get her to think through the steps to solve the problem without a lot of prompting. The Wilson lesson went well. Sophia read all 15 words correctly during the Charting section so she is ready to go onto substep 4.4, which is the last step in Step 4.
math review, Reading comprehension- review of inference
Lesson Outline
Today Sophia began our session with a math review page. When she was finished, she completed an inference reading skill passage and answered the corresponding questions. During the final few minutes of our session, we reviewed the ai and ay letter pattern.
paragraph writing, drawing conclusions, math review
Lesson Outline
Today Sophia finished editing her paragraph on Goblin Sharks. She did an excellent job, and is really beginning to get the idea of paragraph structure. She also completed a reading passage where she practiced the skill of drawing conclusions. When she was finished, she completed a math review sheet.
Substep 4.3: Reading, Spelling and Marking 3 & 4 Syllable Words plus 30 Minute Math Review
Lesson Outline
The math lesson review continues to reinforce the concepts from the previous days. I plan to do 2 lessons today, which would have us be half way through the book. During the Wilson lesson, I'll use 3 and 4 syllable words that would be familiar to Sophia. I'll use similar words in the review, spelling and dictation sections of the lesson. By next week, I hope to start on Substep 4.4, which is the last substep before Step 5.

Lesson Comments
Sophia was totally different today. She was in a chatty and cheerful mood and very talkative. We were able to get 2 more of the math pages completed in the 30 minutes allotted. Sophia challenged me on an answer for the skip counting by 10 question. With the help of ten rods, she was able to figure out that she was wrong. The Wilson lesson went better than yesterday. Sophia read 14 out of 15 words correctly for the Charting activity. She read her 10 sentences without any real problems and marked up 4 words, two of which were 4 syllable words, without any hesitations or problems. The most difficult part of today was keeping her on track. There were quit a few topics that she wanted to talk about. Beetlejuice and Pete the Dragon were 2 of the topics.
goblin shark research, drawing conclusions reading comprehension, math review
Lesson Outline
Today Sophia began our session with a reading comprehension activity that had her practice the skill of drawing conclusions. When she was finished, she read about goblin sharks and took careful notes. She will turn these notes into a paragraph tomorrow. During the final half hour, she completed two math review pages.
