We read pages 180 - 210 today, looking up and making a list of unfamiliar words. Cabo stated that he is more regularly bringing homework home to complete. He had 6 math problems. The directions said to state yes or no and explain. Cabo said he was told he did not have to explain. He did not have history today, so he did not have homework from that class. We talked about getting back in the habit of inputting his homework in his 'My Homework' program, rather than relying on his memory or the whiteboard. We organized his desk so he has a clean workspace tomorrow.

Lesson Comments
Cabo claimed that the 6 problems of math was his only homework. It would be helpful if the teachers wrote down that there is no homework if that is the case.

Lesson Outline
Cabo started his math homework with very little encouragement. He spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out the last problem, but was not coming to a solution. I suggested he move on to his history homework. He was tasked with reading 4 pages and defining four concepts. Cabo wrote one sentence about each concept. We continue to talk about motivation and positive consequences of doing his best work. We ended the session organizing his desk to get ready for tomorrow.

revising and editing and proofreading, organization
Lesson Outline
We spent most of the hour revising and editing an essay on Greek Mythology for language arts. Cabo learned the difference between revising and editing an essay. He also learned the importance of proofreading an essay carefully. Cabo continues to benefit from encouragement to take his time and to do his best work. He said he did not have any homework in math because he took a quiz today. We spent the end of the sessions organizing loose papers, putting books in his cabinet, throwing away wrappers and trash and generally tidying up his desk for tomorrow.

Cabo answered his review questions for history in one sentence per question. We had a discussion about the importance of doing his best work rather than the minimum to get by. We talked about how it is a skill and habit that will prepare him for the future in school and in life. Cabo's math teacher was absent, so he was able to complete his math homework during his math session. We ended the session organizing his room so that he could begin tomorrrow with a clean work space.

When I walked into Cabo's room, he was working on an essay for language arts. He was intent on completing the essay before working on any other assignment. We briefly went over the other assignments. Cabo spent most of the session working on the essay, stating he would complete the other homework at home. Once, the essay was completed, Cabo began to read for history. He said he would solve math problems at home, as well as do the reading for language arts. However, he left 'A Christmas Carol', the book he needed to read for language arts on the floor in his room when he went home. We did organize his room, putting away loose papers and books to ready his work space for tomorrow. Cabo stated that he is getting more of his homework done than in the past.

Time management, homework, school wide holiday activity
Lesson Outline
Cabo knew that part of the session would be devoted to a school-wide holiday activity. We talked about using the time we had until the activity started productively to minimize homework time at home. Cabo had history, language arts and math homework. He was quite adamant that he wanted to start with history because it was the most interesting to him. He did finish his history assignment and then joined the other students for the holiday activity.

Time management, priorities, organization, homework
Lesson Outline
Cabo and I continue to start each session clarifying and inputting his homework assignments. Together, we prioritize his assignments based on time, interest and what he might do at home. Cabo prefers to read on the computer rather than in a textbook. However, the computer has more potential distractions. Today, he completed his history reading and his math homework. He began reading the assigned chapter in his mythology book and said he would complete the reading at home. Cabo benefits from redirection and encouragement when working on his homework.

L.A.
* We reviewed words from his list to reinforce the correct spelling. These words are from the first 60 most commonly written words. We also danced, sang, and chanted the spelling of these words.
* Maverick reviewed the short/long vowel sounds in nonsense and real words.
* Reviewed - short vowel patterns of “ack” “eck”, “ick” “uck” and long pattern “ake”, “ike”, “uke” “oke”.
Introduced – “r” control words and long pattern words like “ai”, “ee”, and “ui”. He read and spelled words with these sounds.
*Syllables- “closed” (CVC/ C) and “open” (VCV) syllable patterns- I gave him many nonsense and real words to divide and read. He needed to plug in a short or long vowel after dividing the word into syllables, giving practice while working towards mastery of this reading pattern. He was also given many words that he had to cut the word into two parts following the syllable rules.
* Test taking strategies were reviewed and practiced. He was given a practice assessment from the “FSA Practice Test Book” test #3 in which he had to apply the test taking strategies. This activity had 1 short written response. He applied the “RACE” format of answering the questions.
