Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by doing the analysis of his last dictation test. Kellan got 5/5 on sounds, 5/5 on real words, 5/5 on nonsense words, and 4/5 on sight words. Kellan practiced the word he missed which was "buffet" Next, Kellan worked on all the sentences. He underlined the first letter of the sentence, circled the punctuation at the end. Kellan scooped all multi-syllabic words and marked up the vowels, digraphs, blends, and welded sounds. Kellan circled the sight words. He did well on these sentences. Next, Kellan read The Transcripts. This reading included a discussion about Congress. Kellan was introduced to the idea of the Legislative Branch of government. Kellan learned that there are 50 states in the U.S. and that each state has two representatives to the Senate. Kellan learned about the House of Representatives and how the number of representatives from each state differs according to the population. We commented that Florida is the third most populated state and has 27 representatives, but that a small state like Rhode Island has only three representatives. Kellan discussed the vocabulary word "transcript" to mean the written document that Congress generates after it has made some important legal decision that will affect the country. We discussed how the transcript is made public through the newspaper and other media. Next, Kellan began his review session for the Book 3 Test. He practiced all the vowels, the consonants: g, b, k, r, s, and l. He practiced the welded sounds: olt, ind, unk, ank, onk, and am. Kellan read the words: catnip, disrupt, district, establish, and blended. These were review words from Book 3. Kellan read a large stack of words from Book 3 and sorted them according to the /kt/ ending, three-syllables, or baseword and suffix. Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced: a,e,i,o,u and schwa. Kellan practiced: g,f,m,k,and z. He practiced ang, ost, ind, am, ing, and ind. Kellan will begin testing on Wednesday.

Kellan started his lesson today by writing five sight words on the whiteboard. Kellan practiced: give, about, ballet, buffet, and fillet. Next, Kellan read 30 words for his charting test. He got 15/15 words correct. Kellan read ten sentences with good decoding of new construction of words with "ing" and "ed" endings. Kellan discussed the vocabulary word "skit" when it came up in the reading. Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse. He reviewed all the vowels and the schwa sound. Kellan reviewed b,g,f,m,s,x,y,z,c,l, and r for consonant and digraph review. He practiced: ang, unk, onk, olt, ing, and ost for welded sound review. Kellan spelled a stack of 3.5 words by saying the baseword first and then spelling words as swinging, insulted, sandblasted, finishing, and shrinking. Kellan completed his dictation test today writing five real words, five nonsense words, five sight words, and three sentences. Kellan will do his analysis next week. He will be preparing for a test on Book 3 next week.

Lesson Outline
Kellan began his lesson by reviewing the map of Manhattan to prepare for the reading. Kellan looked at all the bridges and tunnels that connect Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey. Kellan also asked to see bridges in Paris. We started looking at bridges in Europe by looking at London Bridge. Kellan then looked at the ten bridges that cross the Seine in Paris. These, we noted, are low, arch-supported bridges. We discussed the difference in a suspension bridge. Kellan read Trip to Manhattan. He discussed the idea that a family from Wisconsin take a trip to Manhattan and find that there are many ethnic groups. Ethnic was a vocabulary word for this story. We discussed the idea of "melting pot" as a description for New York because it has so many people with different nationalities. We listed Irish, French, Norwegian, Indian, Native American, Dutch, African American, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, South American, Italian, Pakistani, and many more. Next, Kellan began Lesson 3.5. He practiced all the vowel sounds, including the schwa. Kellan practiced: sh, g, f, b, s, z, v, j, and k. Kellan practiced the welded sounds: old, olt, ank, ang, ong, and all. Next, Kellan reviewed scooping three-syllable words: congressman, fantastic, and punishment. Kellan was introduced to two new suffixes for words that he can already read. Kellan learned about the "ing" and the "ed" suffix when it says /ed./ Kellan read and scooped the words publishing, rented, inspected, standing, and grunted. He learned to underline the base word and circle the suffix. Kellan played Ladder to review a fat stack of words from 3.5.

Lesson Outline
Kellan began his lesson by practicing four sight words: fillet, control, buffet, and ballet. Kellan needed extra work to review the ending of the word: fillet. Kellan then read ten sentences on p. 62 with three-syllable words in the context. Kellan needed a little help on the word "assistant." Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse. Kellan practiced the sounds and letters for a, e, i, o, u, and schwa. Kellan practiced the spelling and sounds of sh, g, f, b, wh, y, x, z, v, and qu. Kellan practiced the sounds and spelling of the welded sounds: old, ind, ang, ank, onk, and unk. Next, Kellan marked up the words extracts, inflicts, and contacts. In these words, Kellan showed me that he knows how to find the base words and the suffix as well as scoop the two syllables. Kellan then worked on five words that were three-syllable: hobgoblin, establish, Atlantic, snapdragon, and punishment. Kellan worked on his dictation by spelling five sounds, five real words, five nonsense words, and five sight words. Kellan spelled: island, control, buffet, fillet, and want correctly. Next, Kellan wrote three sentences. He started his analysis and will finish it on Wednesday.

Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reciting the vowel team. Next he reviewed the vowels, the consonants, and digraphs: th, g, b, wh, p, qu, z, and v. Next, Kellan practiced the welded sounds: old, ind, ink, all, am, an, ost, and ang. Kellan reviewed two-syllable words by marking up the words: distracts, insects, and subjects. In each case, he underlined the baseword, circled the suffix, scooped the syllables, and marked up the vowels. Next, Kellan was introduced to the concept of the three-syllable word. Kellan read the words: fantastic, congressman, Manhattan, basketball, and penmanship. Each of these words was presented on three separate syllable cards so that Kellan could see how the word is constructed and where the word is divided. Three of the words Kellan read were Atlantic, Manhattan, and Wilmington. We spent time looking up maps showing these geographic places and looking at the distances of these cities from Florida. Kellan saw a skyline of Manhattan and saw a map showing the shape of Manhattan. Kellan saw the Freedom Tower, Empire State Building, and Chrysler building and compared the number of feet in height of each. He learned that the Freedom Tower is 1776 feet tall to commemorate the Declaration of Independence. Next, Kellan played Chutes and Ladders to practice a stack of 3.4 words. He practiced the sight words: fillet, buffet, ballet, and control. Kellan read the word list on p. 62 and got 15/15. We will continue with sentences next week.

Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reading a list of sight words used in the sentence readings on p. 57. Kellan read all ten sentences and read carefully on all the two-syllable words. Kellan is taking note of words that end with the blend /kt./ Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse. He reviewed the sounds and letters for all the vowels; consonants and digraphs: qu, s, g, b, g, z, y, and ch. Kellan had a miscue on the digraph ch. He spelled it sh and took time to circle back to the right letters. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: olt, ind, ink, ang, unk, and ank. Next, Kellan scooped and marked up the review words: itself, extend, and lipstick. On "lipstick" we reviewed the rule where usually a two-syllable word with the /k/ sound at the end is spelled with a "c," but in this word, because it is a compound word, the /k/ sound is spelled "ck" as it is in a one-syllable word. Kellan scooped and marked up the words: object, contact, exact, contract, and conduct. We worked on the difference in accented syllables in the words: contract, conduct, and object to indicate if it is a noun or a verb. Kellan was introduced to the sight words: ballet and buffet. Kellan learned that both of these words are French and have a silent "t" at the end of the word. Kellan was curious to know more about ballet. We spent a few minutes watching part of The Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers on Youtube, and also some of the jumps by the famous ballet artist Baryshnikov. Kellan started his dictation. He completed the sounds, real words, and nonsense words with no errors. He is working on the sight words and sentences next time.

Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reading the story from 3.2, The Handball Contest. Kellan looked at a picture of a handball court in order to understand how the game is played. Kellan needed work-ups on the vocabulary words: handball, hot rod, and inept. Kellan was able to retell the problem of the story about two boys who planned to play handball together. Kellan was able to tell me that the insult by one boy was a problem because when you get insulted, you may feel bad about yourself. Kellan discussed the turning point of the story as being the choice that Stratis made to ignore the insult that he was inept at playing handball, and instead, he tried his very best and found out that the game was very close and he might beat his opponent next time. Kellan and I discussed how the choice to refuse to accept a negative comment and still take on a challenge is the best solution for a positive outcome. For the vocabulary words: a definition, sentence, and illustration were added to the notebook for each word. Next, Kellan started a new lesson by reviewing all the vowel sounds with their keywords. Kellan reviewed the consonants and digraphs: g, f, wh, p, qu, j, x, y, and m. Kellan reviewed the closed vowel exceptions and welded sounds: old, ind, olt, ang, all, and unk. Next, Kellan marked up the review words: gangplank, blindfold, and hundred. He did well boxing the welded sounds in gangplank. We reviewed how to mark up the closed vowel exceptions in blindfold. Next, Kellan was introduced to the ending blend sound of /kt./ Kellan read the words: construct, conduct, distract, exact, and subject. He scooped these words into two syllables. We discussed the words conduct and object as being both nouns and verbs and that the syllable that gets the accent distinguishes which use of the word you are using. Kellan played "ladder" with a stack of words from 3.3. He also wanted to play chutes and ladders with the 3.3-word list. Kellan took the charting test on p. 56. At first, Kellan had trouble with the words: obstruct and instinct. After four attempts, Kellan got the word correct and I adjusted his score. He got 15/15 for the lesson test. Next week we will do the sentences.

Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced all the vowels including the schwa sound. Kellan practiced the sounds and letters for the digraphs and consonants: sh, g, f, m, z, h, j, and wh. He practiced the welded sounds: ang, ost, olt, ind, am, and ing. Kellan spelled a stack of two syllable words by tapping on cards faced downward. He spells the word one syllable at a time and turns the card over when he has completed that syllable. This activity is to teach Kellan to break a word into syllables before he attempts to spell the word. Kellan worked on dividing words into syllables and doing markups for: sandwich, dragon, chestnut, seventh, absent, cricket, plastic, and kingdom. Kellan was reminded that in a two-syllable word the ending /k/ sound is very often spelled with a "c" as in the word: frantic. Next, Kellan took his dictation test. He did a great job on all his sight words and got 5/5. Kellan got all the sounds right and spelled the real words and nonsense words correctly. Kellan wrote three sentences. We worked on the analysis of these sentences. Kellan had some difficulty spelling the word "trumpet." We used the whiteboard for him to test a word spelling before putting the word on his paper. This method seemed to help with the spelling of the word "island." Kellan had spelled the word correctly when we practiced with the whiteboard, but when he had to write it on a test on paper, he misspelled the word. The use of the whiteboard helped Kellan to remember how to spell the word. At the next lesson, we will do the paragraph reading and then Kellan will be ready to move on to 3.3.

Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started a new lesson on 3.2 designed to review the two-syllable word and learn where to divide the syllables. Kellan also worked on marking up two-syllable words so that he could pass the real word and the nonsense word tests today. Kellan reviewed all the vowels and their keywords, as well as, the schwa sound and symbol. Kellan reviewed the sounds and letters for sh, b, g, f, and t. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: old, olt, ind, ing, am, ang, an, and ost. Next, Kellan scooped the review nonsense words into syllables: wigglet, divide between the double consonants; frentlap, divide after the blend; and plimmut, divide between the two consonants. Kellan scooped the words ostrich, humpback, spinach, trumpets, and bobsleds into syllables. Kellan underlined the baseword and circled the suffix in trumpets. Kellan learned to scoop between words in a compound word like "humpback." Next, Kellan played "Ladder" using a large stack of 3.2 words. Kellan discussed the vocabulary word: flannel and found out that his jacket inside was made of flannel or material that felt like flannel. Kellan was charted using the words on p. 32. He tested 15/15 on the real words and 15/15 on the nonsense words. Tomorrow, Kellan will read the sentences and complete the lesson for 3.2.
