Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reviewing and analyzing his dictation. Kellan wrote all the sounds correctly. He scooped the syllables on the real words and marked up the vowels. Kellan marked up the nonsense words and scooped them into syllables. Kellan reviewed the rule about dividing a syllable between two consonants. Kellan spelled all of the sight words correctly. Next, Kellan reviewed the sentences. He worked on all the analysis independently and does a good job of circling sight words and marking up every word in the sentence. Kellan read the sentences back to me and was able to spell keywords orally when they were covered up for an oral quiz. Next, Kellan read the story, The Red Sox Win. In this story, the Red Sox are playing the Mets. The first thing we had to establish was Kellan's knowledge of how baseball is played. Kellan worked with me as we wrote a complete diagram of the game of baseball with descriptions of each type of play. Kellan drew the "little men" on the bases and lining up to bat. We wrote a definition, a sentence, and a diagram generated by Kellan for the words inning, home run, frantic, modest, and a grand slam. Kellan looked at diagrams of baseball games showing a grand slam. Kellan was able to read the story and retell the episodes in the story in his own words.

Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reading a stack of 3.2 words displayed on two different syllable cards. Next Kellan was tested on p. 31. He got 13/15 on this test. Kellan read wingspan as "wigspan, and blindfold as "blindford," pronouncing the "i" as a short /i/ as in "it." We reviewed these words on the whiteboard. Next Kellan read ten sentences on p. 43. He mostly read very well, but had some trouble on the word "absent." We continued the lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. Kellan reviewed all the vowel sounds including the schwa. He is beginning to learn to find this symbol and call it correctly. Kellan practiced the letters and sounds: b, k, ch, sh, g, h, j, v, z, and x. Kellan read the words cactus, mascot, and public for review. Then he read the words: slingshot, insult, dragon, chestnut, and plastic. We discussed how a word ending in the /k/ sound in a two-syllable word is often spelled with just a "c" and not a "ck." Kellan reviewed sight words: listen, often, and comb. Then he learned: almost and island. Kellan needed practice remembering that "island" has a silent "s." Kellan took his dictation test. He did well writing five sounds, five two-syllable words, and five nonsense words. Kellan got all of his sight words correct. Kellan wrote three sentences and remembered to capitalize the first letter of the first word. He is also making a wonderful effort to form letters properly, that is, from left to right and top to bottom. We will analyze his work at the next lesson.

Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by doing the analysis of his Dictation on 3.1. Kellan scooped two-syllable words. He marked up the vowels, underlined digraphs and blends, and boxed welded sounds. Kellan got all of his sight words correct. Kellan analyzed three sentences and circled all sight words, scooped two-syllable words, marked punctuation, and marked up vowels. He read each sentence back to me and was able to spell words orally when asked. Next, Kellan read The Best Lunch. He did a great job reading the passage fluently. Kellan needed to stop to learn the meaning of the words: famish and beckon. For these words, we added a definition and sentence to Kellan's dictionary. Then, Kellan made a diagram to illustrate the meaning of the word. Kellan was able to retell the story about the husband who made a shrimp salad for everyone in the family. Kellan was curious about how to make a shrimp salad, so we looked up a few recipes online. Next, Kellan started the drills for lesson 3.2. He recited all the vowels and the new schwa sound of /u./ Kellan practiced the sounds and keywords for: sh, g, b, f, r, s, z, l, and wh. He practiced the sounds and letters with keywords to: ost, ind, ing, ild, ang, an, and am. Next, Kellan read three review words: seven, wagon, and punish. He practiced scooping the two-syllable words after the first consonant. Kellan practiced making the schwa symbol above an unaccented syllable as in the word: wagon. Kellan then practiced the new words: gumdrop, problem, children, pumpkin, and windmill. He read these words for syllable cards where Kellan could see how these words are divided into syllables. Kellan played Ladder to review a large stack of 3.2 words including some nonsense words. Kellan is making steady progress.

Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reciting the vowels and their keywords. Kellan practiced the digraphs and consonants: sh, v, z, g, l,m, p, qu, j, and ck. He practiced the welded sounds: ong, ost, old, ind, ank, and onk. Next, Kellan did markups on the words: stumps, lunch, and splash. These markups helped Kellan review baseword and suffix, digraph blend, and three-letter blend. Kellan was introduced to words with two syllables: upset, nutmeg, sunlit, lapdog, and public. In these words, Kellan could see the words split after the first consonant or between two consonants. Kellan learned that a syllable has one vowel sound. Kellan practiced dividing the words: catnip, bathtub, napkin, sunfish, cactus, and tennis. Kellan played Ladder to practice a stack of words from Lesson 3.1. Kellan practiced writing the sight words: often, listen, want, half, and comb. Next, Kellan was tested on the word list on p. 2. He received a 15/15 or perfect score on reading these words. Kellan read ten sentences from page 16 to practice putting two-syllable words in context. Kellan reviewed phrasing and worked on smooth, automatic reading.

Book 2, Lesson 1 Nonsense Words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced the sounds and letters for a, e, i, o, u, and schwa. Kellan practiced keywords and sounds for: sh, th, qu, g, f, x, y, and z. Kellan practiced the welded sounds: olt, ind, ost, ang, nk, ank. Next, Kellan marked up the words strupt, strimp, and sprund. At first, Kellan tried to scoop the word into two syllables. This activity gives Kellan a chance to critically apply his skills and not expect that all exercises will be alike. Next, Kellan marked up and scooped words into syllables: findid, exvim, comvig, poplmeg, and casbit. Kellan practiced the sight words "listen" and "often" using the whiteboard. We talked about the small word "list" in "listen" to help us remember to put the "t" in the word. Kellan took his dictation test by writing five sounds, five real words, five nonsense words, five sight words, and three sentences. Kellan will do the analysis at our next class together.

Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words Nonsense Words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reciting the sounds and letters from the Vowel Team. Next, he reviewed the sounds of the vowels plus the new schwa sound of /u./ Kellan reviewed the sounds and letters g, b, x, f, r, s, /z/, sh wh, th, and ch. He reviewed the sounds and keywords for the welded sounds: ong, olt, am, an, ing, ost, and ind. Kellan marked up the review words: jackets, channels, and kennels on the whiteboard using colorful markers. He was required to underline the baseword and circle the suffix, scoop the syllables, and mark up the vowels and digraphs. Next, Kellan applied these skills to the nonsense words: kelmins, poplangs, tipdex, undopsl, azbim. I showed Kellan how to mark up a word that has only one consonant. He learned to scoop after the consonant. Kellan also learned to make the schwa symbol and apply it above the vowel of a two-syllable word ending in an unaccented syllable like the word: comet. Kellan played Chutes and Ladders with a stack of words from 3.1 including many nonsense words. Kellan took his test on p. 15 and got 15/15 Nonsense words to read. Kellan read ten sentences on p. 17. He had a little trouble with the word napkin. Once he divided the word into syllables, he was able to read the word.

Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson today with a review of the letters, sounds, and keywords of the vowel team. Next, Kellan took dictation of three sentences from 3.1. After completing the sentences, he did the analysis that is required. Kellan does this exercise on his own. He needs very little prompting. He knows that he underlines the first letter of a sentence and circles the punctuation at the end. He circled all the sight words. He scooped two-syllable words; marked up the vowels; starred the bonus letters. Kellan read the sentences back to me and spelled the two-syllable words aloud when I covered up the word. Kellan then read the story about Kevin and Justin. Kellan wanted to draw the two characters while going through the story. He was able to paraphrase the story and was able to tell me the problem of the story. At the end of the lesson, I read a chapter from Because of Winn Dixie to Kellan. It is about the part where Opal asks the preacher to tell her ten things about her mother because she was ten years old.

Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson today by reciting the vowel team. Little by little he will get familiar with these 24 vowel phonemes and be able to decode many more new words. Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse and reviewed the spelling and sounds of all the vowels including his new symbol for the "schwa" which sounds like /u/ for any vowel in the unaccented syllable at the end of a two-syllable word. Kellan practiced writing two new sight words on the whiteboard with colorful markers. He wrote: listen and often. Today was the second day of practicing these new words. Next, Kellan built the review words: stunts, spend, and blinks. He was able to tell me baseword-suffix, blends, and a digraph. Kellan was then taught how to practice spelling two-syllable words by tapping on two cards and spelling the word one syllable at a time. Kellan spelled admit, solid, suntan, tiptop, and puffball using this method. Next, Kellan worked on his dictation test. He did a perfect job on all his real words and nonsense words. During the dictation, Kellan misspelled both listen and often. Corrections were made during the analysis portion of the test. Kellan also marked up all ten words on his test by scooping the two suffixes, and marking up the vowels, digraphs, blends, and welded sounds. Kellan will work on sentences next week. He is doing well in Book 3.

Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson today by practicing five sight words on the whiteboard using colorful markers. He was introduced to the words: listen and often. Both of these words have a silent "t" which Kellan needs to learn by rote. Kellan also reviewed the sight words: want, half, and comb. He remembered the "a" in want and the "l" in half. Kellan needed review on the "b" in comb. Next, Kellan read a large stack of 3.1 words including nonsense words. All of these words are two-syllable. Next, Kellan wrote the words upset, public, sunlit, and magnets. He learned how to mark up the syllables by scooping them. Then he marked up the vowels. For the word "magnets" Kellan underlined the baseword and circled the suffix also. Kellan took the word test on p. 2. He scored 15/15. This was great because it was his first test on two-syllable words. Kellan read ten sentences from p. 16. He did a good job sounding out every word and scooping the phrases that make sense for oral comprehension. This is call prosody. Kellan has a very good oral reading expression.

Book 2 Review and Testing
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by sorting a word stack into eight categories. Many of the words overlapped into different categories and Kellan had to tell me all three. The categories were: words with two-letter blends, words with three-letter blends, words with digraph blends, words with welded sounds, words with closed vowel sound exceptions, words with baseword and suffix, words with bonus letters, and nonsense words. Kellan worked with the word cards and reviewed all the concepts learned in Book 2. This activity gave Kellan a high challenge, but with assistance, he was able to complete the task. Next, Kellan took his test on reading real words. He scored 15/15. Kellan took his test on Nonsense words. He scored 15/15. These tests include all of the skills taught in Book 2. Next, Kellan took a word analysis test. He had to find all the basewords and suffixes and underline the baseword and circle the suffix. Next, Kellan boxed all the welded sounds and the closed vowel exceptions. Kellan underlined all the digraphs and all the blends. He was able to find the two-letter blends at the beginning and ends of words. Kellan underlined the three-letter blends. Next, Kellan had to mark up all the vowels and star the bonus letters. Kellan did well on this part of the test. The final part of the test for Book 2 is a spelling test. Kellan spelled 15 real words from Book 2 and 15 Nonsense words from Book 2. Kellan got 13/15 on his real word test. He got 14/15 on his Nonsense word test. Both of these grades are passing grades. Kellan made small errors on naming a "p" as a "q." Another error was writing "skr" instead of "scr" on the word "scrub." Kellan is to be congratulated for completing Book 2 successfully. Next week we will begin Book 3.
