Symone began the session with a review of letter and welded sounds. Several nonsense words were created with the magnetic tiles and Symone had no difficulty reading them. Word cards from step 3 were read by Symone. She matched syllables of various words and then read them. Some words were dictated to Symone and she spelled them using the magnetic tiles. For the written part of the lesson Symone experienced some difficulty. She had problems spelling words with either the short i or e sound. She did an excellent job spelling the nonsense words. Symone is learning to spell words one syllable at a time. She practiced multiplication facts. For the final aspect of the lesson we worked on solving a word problem.
Symone began the session with a review of the sounds for short vowels, digraphs, welded and selected consonants. Word cards from step three were accurately read by Symone. She was also given nonsense words to decode and did a terrific job dividing each of these words into syllables and reading them. A syllable matching activity followed. Symone read several sentences in which she had to supply the correct words. A list of sight words was presented and she read them with 100% accuracy. Symone was asked to complete a variety of multiplication facts. She answered 98/100 correctly!! For the final aspect of the session Symone worked on a word problem. We will continue to have a word problem each session. Super work today!
We started with the sound drill and then reviewed words ending in ic and ct. Symone then matched syllable cards to make words. Next she read and sorted word cards into piles depending on the rule they followed. She charted 15 out of 15 correct words and then read sentences. After completing dictation, we read an article about the Compliment Guys. She highlighted her copy, selecting what she thought was the most important idea in each paragraph. Then she reread those sentences and retold the article in her own words. This seems to be her favorite part of the lesson as she enjoys the stories about people best. We finished with a review of the 6, 7 and 8 times tables. She wrote out the complete times tables on a white board and then answered questions from another white board on the opposit side of the room. While she was able to answer many out of order, she was still needing to check her written out tables in order to answer correctly. It has been a pleasure working with Symone this summer and I wish her well in the coming school year!
Today's lesson was Step 3.2 Wilson. We focused on multi syllabic words ending in ic as well as syllables with blends and digraphs. Symone read and scooped syllables for word cards, did word list reading correctly reading 15 out of 15 words and read sentences. We then worked on spelling multi syllabic wordsand did dictation. Lastly we read a story on Nelson Mandella for comprehension. She read each paragraph, highlighting what she thought was the most important concept. Afterwards she re read what she had highlighted and did a great job retelling the story to me. She enjoys the articles about people most.
Today's lesson focused on syllable division rules for two syllable words. We reviewed blends and welded exceptions. Next we worked on closing in the first syllable if there was only one consonant between vowels, splitting between double consonants, and keeping a digraph together. Symone correctly matched 20 words whose syllables were written on separate cards and charted at 12 out of 15 words, and then 15 out of 15. She read and scooped 10 sentences. Next we reviewed spelling for multisyllabic words and how to tap the syllables. She finished by reading a short story and retelling in her own words before working on math facts. We went back to 5's and 6's since we have been on 7 and 8 for a while. As always, she was a delight to work with.
We began the lesson by reviewing three letter blends, digraph blends, and welded exceptions just to make sure they were solid since a week had gone by since the posttest. We then started step 3.1, two syllable words. Symone did a great job reading the words (15 out of 15 correct). We read an article on Ruby Bridges which Symone selected. She was very interested in it and was able to provide many details afterwards. We finished with some review of the 7 and 8 times tables which are about the same.
Todays lesson was a practice posttest for step 2. We covered digraphs, blends, welded sounds and welded exceptions. On the word reading, Symone did a great job and correctly read 14 out of 15 real words and 15 out of 15 nonsense words. With guidance, she was able to correctly mark words, although she needed reminders of "what is the vowel saying" as well as prompts to slow down and tap the words. On the spelling, she did a very good job correctly spelling 12 out of 15 words. When there are three letter blends, she has difficulty hearing the sounds. We will review three letter blends and welded exceptions next week and move on to multisyllabic words (step 3). We also reviewed the 7 and 8 times tables. Symone is able to do them in order but gets confused when they are presented out of order.
Todays lesson focused on blends at the beginning and end of the word, three letter blends and blends including a digraph. We also worked on identifying the syllable type and what sound the vowel is making. Once this concept is completely understood, we can move on to multisyllabic words. Symone did a good job on the word reading and sentence reading and charted 93% reading nonsense words with blends. On dictation, she needs to slow down, repeat a word and tap it before writing. This greatly improves accuracy. We finished reading the article on Exotic Animals which she enjoyed but was not able to provide as many details of what she had read as the last session.
This lesson focused on making sure Symone understands the difference between a closed syllable and a closed exception (vowel says its name). This is critical before we move on to two syllable words. She did a great job of reading all the words and sorting them by vowel sound. She does not enjoy dramatically reading the sentences for fluency! She did a great job on dictation, especially when she taps the words. She read silently a short story and had very good recall of details. We did a much longer article about exotic animals that she was very attentive to. She remembered many details with prompting about the animals. We finished with 7 and 8 times tables review. 8's need some work.
We started the session with multiplicaton facts on the balance board, reviewing sevens and eights. We followed the Wilson lesson steps reviewing a closed syllable, blends and suffix s then welded exceptions. Symone read 15 of 15 welded exceptions correctly and then read 10 sentences. She is still grasping the concept of scooping the words as a reader would fluently read them and not cutting a sentence in half randomly. We reviewed the blends, suffix s and welded exceptiongs again in spelling. During dictation, when she taps the the words she is much more likely to get them correct and she is beginning to realize it's faster to do it the first time. She read a short story in the Wilson reader and then we did an article about a student and his service dog which she found interesting. As always, she was very focused and attentive throughout the lesson.
