Book 2, Review Lesson
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reciting all of the vowel teams and their keywords. Next, Kellan recited all of the vowels with keywords. He recited the digraphs and consonants: qu, f, j, t, c, m, n, h, and ck. Kellan practiced the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: an, ind, old, ild, ost, olt, ink, and onk. Kellan practiced marking up the words: sold, hang, mild, most, and jolt. Kellan reviewed his lessons on baseword and suffix, words with bonus letters, closed vowel exception words, welded sound words, nonsense words, three letter blend words, digraph blend words, two-letter blend words. Kellan had a stack of words from Book 2 which were mixed including all of the above constructions. His job was to survey the categories and find two or three categories where the word could fit. For example, Kellan had the word "lunch." He had to find the category that included a digraph blend. Kellan worked hard on this assignment. We will continue on Wednesday to get him ready for his test on Book 2.

Lesson Comments
Kellan was challenged today to be able to call to mind all of the lessons from Book 2. It took Kellan a good amount of trial and error and reteaching to be able to sort the words correctly. This is a higher-level activity than anything he has done so far. We will practice until Kellan feels ready for the test on Book 2.

Book 2, Lesson 5 Three letter blends
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced spelling all the short vowel sounds. Kellan practiced the digraphs and consonants: sh, g, f, m, y, z, k, and ch. He practiced the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: ong, olt, ost, ild, ing, and unk. Kellan built three review words with magnetic letters: stuts, flunks, scalp. Kellan built the new words: splash, string, scrub, spring, and strong. Kellan could recognize a welded sound. Kellan could name the three letter blends. Kellan practiced the sight words: walk, half, front, friend, said, and asked using colorful markers on the whiteboard. Next, Kellan took his dictation test. He wrote five sounds, five real words, five nonsense words, and five sight words. Kellan wrote three sentences. Next, Kellan did the analysis on these words and sentences. Kellan missed the words "said" and "stuff" on this test. He reviewed how to spell the sight word and Kellan reviewed the rules for adding a bonus letter "f" at the end of a one-syllable word. Kellan reviewed all his sentences. He did all the correct markups indicating his knowledge of capitalization, punctuation, spelling sight words, three-letter blends, welded sounds and two-letter blends. Kellan read his sentences back to me and spelled words aloud as required.

Book 2, Lesson 5 Three letter blends
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by doing the analysis of his last sentence from dictation. He did it without any prompting. He knows that he must underline the first letter of a sentence to show that it is always capitalized. He knows that he must circle the punctuation. He circled all the sight words and did the markups on all the words. Next, Kellan read the story Dan and Tom. Kellan read the story about how the two boys went to the crest of a hill to have their lunch. Kellan drew a picture and made cartoon characters for the two buys in the story. He drew the cartoon dog which Dan ran after. Kellan learned the vocabulary words: crest and pop (when it means "soda.") Kellan paraphrased the story and could answer comprehension questions. Next, Kellan started a new lesson on 2.5. He drilled all the vowels and their keywords. Kellan reviewed the consonants and digraphs: sh, v, y,g, s, and f. He reviewed the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: ong, olt, ing, ost, ild, ang, am, and unk. Kellan reviewed the five letter words by reading: crisp, branch, and plants from the magnetic letters. Kellan answered questions about blends, digraph blends, and baseword and suffix. He needed review on baseword and suffix to call it to mind. Kellan was introduced to words with three-letter blends: Kellan read the words: strap, script, splash, string, and spring from the magnetic letters. The new sound pattern was entered into the notebook. Next, Kellan played Fun in the Snow to review words from the 2.5 list. Kellan read both real words and nonsense words. Tomorrow we will continue this new lesson.

Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse.Kellan reviewed the spelling of all the short vowel sounds He reviewed the letters v, ch, w, wh, l, j, b, d, c, ck, and k. Kellan practiced the spelling of the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: ong, ing, ost, olt, ind, and ung. Kellan used the magnetic tiles to build the review words: skunk, rind, and cold.Kellan used the magnetic letters to build the 5-sound words: squint, cramp, crust, branch, and craft. He reviewed the concept of digraph blend like: nch in lunch. Kellan built the nonsense words: twend grimp, glest, squomp, and thrasp. He practiced the sight words: said, asked, week, front, half, and want. Kellan wrote these words with colorful markers on the whiteboard. Next, Kellan took the dictation test for this lesson. He wrote five sounds, five real words, five sight words, and three sentences. Kellan had a little trouble with the word "said." This word is new for him. Kellan is making a concerted effort to form his letter from the top down. This will help him in writing and directionality in reading. Kellan did most of the analysis of his work using a turquoise pen. He remembered how to underline blends, box welded sounds, mark up closed vowel exceptions. Kellan circled sight words and did correct capitalization and punctuation. Kellan is ready to move on to the next lesson 2.5 next week.

Book 2, Lesson 4 Five sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by analyzing the last sentence in his dictation. He did it all by himself, underlining the first letter of a sentence, circling all the sight words, marking up all the words with digraphs, welded sounds, and closed vowel exceptions. Kellan started lesson 2.4 by reciting all the sounds of the vowels and their keywords. He reviewed the digraphs and consonants: sh, v, g, b, n, and k. Kellan reviewed the sounds of the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: old, ost, ind, ang, unk, ink, and olt. Kellan read the review words: mold child and wild, applying the closed vowel exception rule. Kellan needed a review of the meaning of the word "mold." We looked up the definition in his personal dictionary and reviewed his diagram and the sentence. Next, Kellan was instructed about the use of five sounds in a word. Kellan read the words: shrimp, clump, flunk, branch, and shrunk from the magnetic tiles. He could see that sometimes the sounds are within the welded sound. They are still counted as individual sounds. Kellan played Chutes and Ladders to help him practice a large stack of real and nonsense words from 2.4. Kellan practiced the sight words: about, out, want, front, and half. Kellan still needs a review of the words "want" and "half." Kellan read the sentences on p. 56 using a vis-a-vis marker to scoop the phrases as he read. Next, Kellan was tested on the word list on p. 56. He received a perfect score on page 56. Kellan will continue tomorrow.

Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reviewing the sounds from the vowel team chart with their keywords. Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse and practiced the five short vowels; the digraphs, and consonants: sh, g, wh, p, qu, g, and l. Kellan practiced the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: old, ost, ild, ind, am, and ank. Kellan used the magnetic tiles to build the review words: bloss, quelt, and hisp. Kellan built the closed vowel exception words: bind, bend, grind, quilt, and mild. Kellan practiced the sight words: front, want, comb, friend, and from using colorful markers on the whiteboard. Following the practice session, Kellan worked on his dictation test for 2.3. He spelled all of the sight words correctly. Kellan got full credit for the real words and the nonsense words that he wrote. Kellan spent the remainder of the period analyzing his test for sounds, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. He is really improving in spelling and letter formation.

Book 2, Lesson 3 Exceptions to welded sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reviewing the vowel sounds with keywords. He reviewed the consonants and digraphs: sh, v, g,j, and b. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and exceptions: ong, all, ink, ost, ild, and olt. Next Kellan read the words: sing, slots, and frogs from the magnetic tiles. Kellan needed a review on reading slots. By showing him the baseword first, then adding the suffix "s" he was able to read the word correctly. Kellan read the words: scold, mind, molt, volt, and bind. We did dictionary pages for the words: scold, molt, volt, and bind. Kellan needed a context and discussion to begin to accommodate these words into his vocabulary. Kellan continued his word study by playing "Chutes and Ladders" where Kellan rolls the die, then he reads that number of word cards in order to move ahead. Kellan loves this game. He is getting good practice with the new closed vowel exception words. Kellan was charted on 2.3 words. He had difficulty with the word "wild" but after some stopping and reviewing the magnetic tiles and the sounds of the closed vowel exceptions, he got the word right. Kellan has passed 2.3 with 15/15. Kellan read ten sentences and I coached him to learn where to phrase when reading. This is working on prosody. He still has dictation to finish and then we can move to the next lesson next week.

Book 2, Lesson 3 Exceptions to welded sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He reviewed all the vowels. Kellan reviewed: sh, ch, m, p, qu, r, and z. He reviewed welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: ang, olt, ing, ink, ost, and ild. Kellan practiced the sight words: wind, friend, front, and comb on the whiteboard with colorful markers. Kellan took his dictation for 2.3. He got all of the sounds, real words, and nonsense words correct. Kellan did an analysis on these words by underlining the closed vowel exception and marking it with a "c" with an "x" through it and putting the long sign (macron) over the long vowel. Kellan underlined the digraphs and the blends properly. He drew an asterisk over the bonus letters and marked up the closed vowel sounds. Kellan needed review and rewriting of the sight words: want, comb, front, and friend. Kellan will still need more practice to commit these sight words to memory. Kellan took dictation by writing three sentences. He remembered to capitalize the first word of a sentence. Kellan put proper punctuation after each sentence. He marked up the vowels and the syllable types. Kellan had a problem misspelling shop as "shope." He made the correction on this word. Kellan read the story on p. 53 The Best Host. Kellan discussed the jobs that a host has in order to be a good host. Kellan was able to retell the story in his own words. He helped to define the word "host" by telling me things that a host does to make a guest feel welcomed.

Book 2, Lesson 3 Exceptions to welded sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reviewing vowels and keywords, consonants and digraphs, and welded sounds and exceptions: an, ank, am, all, ang, ong, ung, ink, old, olt ild, ost, ind. Kellan wrote the words: sold, find, most, mild, and jolt on the whiteboard with colorful markers. For each word, he learned how to mark up a closed vowel exception by drawing a long sign over the vowel and writing a "c" for "closed" under the vowel and then drawing an "x" through it to show it is an exception. Kellan asked what the word "exception" means and I explained that this welded sound does not follow the closed vowel rule. The vowel is long instead of short. Kellan practiced three sight words: wind, friend, and front. Kellan worked on the word "friend" to get it into his spelling of sight words. Kellan read a word list on p. 49. He got 11/15 correct. Kellan made the vowel short in these words: wild, mild, post, and rind. In each case, the lesson requires that Kellan change the short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. We will keep practicing with keywords until he masters this lesson. Next, Kellan read ten sentences on p. 51. He did not recognize the word "crab." We discussed what kind of animal a crab is, where it is found, and Kellan saw a picture of a blue claw crab and a stone crab. We discussed how the stone crab claw is removed from the animal because the animal can grow the claw back. Kellan was familiar with regeneration by talking to me about how a lizard can grow its tail back again. Kellan wrote a definition today for the word mold. He looked at different pictures with samples of mold and drew a diagram in his Wilson dictionary. Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse to review all the short vowels. He reviewed the spelling of sh, ch, m, p, qu, r, and z. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and exceptions: ang, olt, ing, ink, ost, and ild. Kellan used the magnetic tiles to build the words: bliss, lunch, and the nonsense word, "hisp." Kellan is building words with closed vowel exceptions. He built the words gold, kind, and mold. Kellan will continue this activity and take dictation on Wednesday.
